Back when we learned that Tron: Ares was set to release in 2025, I playfully compared Jared Leto’s ominous-looking Ares character to the peaceful Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Although I still find humor in this comparison, especially considering what we’ve heard about Tron 3, director Joachim Rønning has offered a more sensible alternative that I must acknowledge as fitting and reasonable.
Joachim Rønning’s Reason For Equating Ares To Pinocchio Is Pure Disney
In an interview for Empire’s June 2025 edition, the director of “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” explained in a straightforward manner why he chose Pinocchio as his leading character: because he found him particularly appealing.
To put it simply, I’ve often found myself comparing Ares to Pinocchio. Just like the wooden puppet yearning for humanity, Ares desires to become real.
Hmm, it seems like the main character of “Tron: Ares’” might not be as villainous as we thought. Perhaps that towering Recognizer causing chaos in the city is actually on a mission for peace! Those police cars that were cut in half? Just a big misunderstanding, much like Pinocchio unwittingly getting himself into servitude at Pleasure Island!

In essence, it appears that the portrayal of the main character in the upcoming Tron trilogy might undergo a change, shifting towards a more favorable and friendlier image. The director, Mr. Rønning, provides additional context suggesting this transformation. However, you can form your own opinion by reading his further comments below.
We discussed extensively about him being like a newborn exploring the world, inviting the viewers to perceive the world as if they were him. The trivial aspects that we might overlook or no longer notice were emphasized, and indeed, they were crucial. A more significant theme in the movie revolves around understanding what it entails to be human, given that he’s a computer program. This aspect adds depth to the film’s exploration of humanity.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but acknowledge that Ares, in the realm of Tron: Ares, is more than just a character – he’s a Program. This unique status makes him vulnerable to changes, friendships, or even erasure at the hands of human Users. While we continue to ponder over Jared Leto’s intriguing Disney enigma, let’s delve into why the Geppetto/Pinocchio parallel feels incredibly fitting given our current understanding.

The Ares/Pinocchio Analogy Makes That Early Tron: Ares Easter Egg Even More Powerful
Let’s revisit the time when the first image for this project was unveiled to the audience. As the deep lore of Tron: Ares hinted, Mr. Ares appears to have been created by Dillinger Systems, a suspicious entity that has long been at odds with Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) and the ENCOM brand. Given their history, I find it hard to believe that the Program tinted red has positive feelings towards Flynn’s computing legacy, or at least not in its original form.
In the game unfolding at “Dillinger Systems vs. ENCOM,” it seems Jared Leto’s character could be seen advocating for a ceasefire of sorts. This can be likened to a rebellion against his family lineage within this cutthroat competition, as it may appear that Evan Peters’ Julian Dillinger engineered him to stir up trouble in the real world.

Reflecting on the D23 2024 presentation for “Ares,” the actor’s assertion of being the “Master Control” of the Dillinger Grid certainly strengthens that argument. Now, if he hails from the Dillinger Grid, I can’t help but wonder if the setting of “Tron: Legacy” wasn’t actually referred to as the “Flynn Grid.” Could there be other Grids out there ready to reveal themselves? If so, could I possibly get one? Oh, please?!
As a die-hard fan of the Disney’s Tron franchise, I can tell you that the anticipation for Tron: Ares has been palpable. On October 10th, we’ll finally get to witness Ares’ ambitions unfold in our world, and understand potential implications for both Users and Programs. The journey continues…
