Fans have been eagerly anticipating it for nearly three years, but now they can reconnect with June (Elisabeth Moss), Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), and others in Season 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale. In this new season, they strive to free themselves from the grasp of Gilead and rescue more individuals along the way. Hulu delivered an enjoyable viewing experience by releasing the first trio of episodes from the 10-episode final season all at once, providing a foundation for the next stage in June’s adventure.

In the opening of the new season, the narrative continues from where it ended in Season 5: June travels by train with Baby Nicole to Vancouver, only to find Serena on board with baby Noah too. The story takes an unexpected twist when June arrives in Alaska, and the person she encounters there is a surprise that left viewers in tears.

Who Did June Find in Alaska in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale‘?

As the train’s atmosphere grows tense upon discovering Serena’s true identity, things become even more challenging when June finds out from Moira (Samira Wiley) that the train won’t be stopping in Vancouver due to overcrowded refugee influx. With no clue of their destination, she can only wish for a secure location. All her weary body craves at this moment is rest.

Later on, June is woken up on the train by a man who informs her that this is the final stop. Holding Nichole tightly, she disembarks the train, noticing an American flag proudly fluttering in the wind above her and smiling. It’s Alaska, as it happens, where they warmly receive refugees from Gilead and have a designated refugee outpost ready to assist them.

I, myself, dutifully queue up as directed, readying to complete my checkout and registration process. As I lean down to comfort Nichole, emotions overwhelm me and tears start streaming down my face. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact cause – happiness, frustration, sorrow, or sheer exhaustion from everything that’s transpired. Regardless, it’s a stunning display of emotion masterfully executed by Moss in one of her standout performances.

A figure is spotted strolling on the lawn, distinctly clad in scrubs. Approaching another colleague, they receive a clipboard bearing a list of names. However, upon reading a particular name, they let go of the clipboard with surprise. “June?” they exclaim. “June Osborne?” The questioner’s gaze meets that of someone they hadn’t expected to cross paths with again: their mother, Holly (played by Cherry Jones). They move towards each other and share a heartrending hug, marking the finale of this episode with a glimmer of hope, implying that perhaps the struggle was justified.

Where Has Holly Been All This Time?

Dr. Holly was skilled in medical practices, particularly those related to family planning such as vasectomies and abortions, before the Gilead regime seized control. An ardent advocate for women’s autonomy, she was initially skeptical of June before her arrest. She aspired for more career success for her daughter and believed marrying Luke was an unfortunate decision.

Following June’s arrest, I was left clueless about my mother’s fate until Aunt Lydia showed me a video of the Colonies. Spotting her among the images in that scene was one of the saddest moments from The Handmaid’s Tale for me. I was devastated because I knew the Colonies equated to a death sentence. The harsh working conditions, with toxic chemicals and pollutants, poor nutrition, and frequent deaths made it a grim reality.

The reunion carried an extraordinary charm as neither woman knew about the other’s fate. Each assumed the other had passed away. Holly confessed her attempts to reach June were fruitless. She admits to a sense of relief whenever she didn’t receive a response, for fear that learning June was alive would have been too much for her to bear.

Indeed, June was curious about how her mother managed to live through the Colonies, as many others didn’t. She stated that being a doctor made her valuable, and she was assigned to care for her aunts and guardians. However, she remained captive and witnessed her friends being executed. The escape was facilitated by what remained of the U.S. army, who had liberated her colony six months earlier, and she was subsequently sent to Alaska, where she has been working ever since. Each day, she harbored the hope that she might one day see June, and that dream finally came true.

Holly’s Role Going Forward in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

At the conclusion of Episode 2, “Exile,” June realizes that despite having her mother returned to her, she feels compelled to return herself. This decision stems from discovering from Mark Tuello (Sam Jaeger) that Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and Moira (Samira Wiley), who have been unreachable via phone calls for several months, have joined Mayday and are preparing to resist against Gilead and New Bethlehem.

As a devoted mother, Holly implores June not to depart, yet she eventually grasps that her child must make the necessary decisions to reunite their family. Therefore, she appeals to June, in her role as a grandmother, to consider leaving Nichole with her care.

Holly vows to provide tender care for her granddaughter, with the hope of reuniting everyone in the future. Eventually, June concedes, understanding that managing what she needs to do would be challenging with a toddler at hand. She shares with her mother that the child’s true name is actually Holly, a name chosen by herself at birth. However, when Serena and Commander Fred (Joseph Fiennes) adopted the baby, they gave her a new name. To June, the child was always Holly in her heart.

This brings warmth to Holly’s heart. Despite the occasional disagreements, it’s evident that there is a profound affection between mother and daughter, though they still bear scars from their past. However, these issues seem insignificant now. June was never capable of meeting her mother’s expectations, but witnessing how much June has persevered and continues to do so, Holly might come to understand that the minor squabbles were merely trivial.
