Approaching just over three months until the premiere of “I Know What You Did Last Summer“, we’ve got our initial glimpse at Jennifer Love Hewitt, who is back as Julie James in this upcoming movie. This sequel to the 1998 film titled “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” is set for release in 2025. Alongside Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr. will also return, with both actors acting as guides of sorts for a new batch of teenagers who find themselves pursued by the enigmatic Fisherman.
The latest images are provided by People (shown below), who also interviewed Hewitt about her comeback to the series that catapulted her to stardom after over 25 years. “I must confess, I experienced extreme anxiety for 48 hours prior [to filming], wondering if I could handle it and whether I’d succeed,” she admitted, further explaining, “There’s a lot of expectation.
It’s not unexpected that Hewitt had reservations about starring in the sequel of her legacy, given her past openness about her apprehension on this topic. However, she also took moments to commend the fresh cast of “I Know What You Did Last Summer“, consisting of Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King and Chase Sui Wonders. At 46 years old, Hewitt acknowledged their talents as “phenomenal,” while acknowledging that the renowned horror series has transitioned into a new era of cinema enthusiasts.
As I watch this film unfold before my eyes, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride. This is not just a movie; it’s a piece of art that belongs to its creators now. Like a proud parent, I hand over the reins, encouraging them to run with it, to enjoy it, and to make it their own unique masterpiece. It’s a testament to their talent, their vision, and their passion. And as they carry it forward, I can only smile and think, ‘Bravo! Take it and let your creativity soar.’
‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Is a “Popcorn Summer Event”
Under the guidance of director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the plot of I Know What You Did Last Summer appears to closely resemble the original story, involving a fresh batch of teenagers who conspire to conceal a lethal car accident. However, in contrast to the original group, these teens have the support of Hewitt and Prinze Jr.’s characters, who are well-acquainted with the perils of keeping secrets hidden.
Contrasting with the original’s more serious approach, Robinson describes this fresh adaptation as an exhilarating, entertaining spectacle. But fear not, gore enthusiasts! The legacy sequel doesn’t compromise on the bloodshed you’ve come to expect: “It is not a somber film. It is a lively, popcorn-worthy summer extravaganza,” she shared with People, emphasizing further that it promises to be a delightful, gory treat.
In contrast to the initial film, where it seemed like he was merely tracking and attacking his victims, this sequel presents a more deliberate and systematic approach for each kill. The first movie had minimal graphic content, but this one is far more violent and gory.
Hewitt also mentions that “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is “frightening,” but she’s not particularly fond of horror films, so her fear might differ from what die-hard fans of the genre consider scary. Nevertheless, expectations are high for the upcoming sequel, so you can judge whether it lives up to its hype when it releases in theaters on July 18 by Sony Pictures Releasing.
