Netflix’s show “Survival of the Thickest” has captivated viewers for two seasons now. The initial season drew me in with its compelling story of starting anew. In the first season, we follow Mavis (Michelle Buteau) as she struggles to survive, while in the second, we see her flourishing. The first season concludes with Mavis deciding to take a leap of faith and go to Italy to be with Luca (Marouane Zotti).
In a way reminiscent of grand romantic gestures often seen in favorite rom-coms, it’s the kind I appreciate. But those hoping for an instant romance between Luca and Mavis in the next season might be mistaken. A good TV series requires character development, which means they’ll have their struggles and unresolved feelings ahead in Season 2.
A significant portion of “Survival of the Thickest Season 2″ centers on the development of the main group, focusing particularly on their personal and emotional maturation. This encompasses their professional lives, with a special emphasis on Mavis’s journey within the fashion industry.
Warning Survival of the Thickest spoilers are ahead. Proceed with caution.
The Fashion Industry Discussions Stand Out To Me In Survival of The Thickest Season 2
Throughout my journey, I’ve come to realize that the world of fashion is deeply ingrained in the “Survival of the Fittest” DNA. This season, the series has presented an even more intriguing and motivational perspective on this subject. In the climactic episodes of Season 2, I find myself squaring off against a renowned fashion designer, Charles Renee, portrayed by RonReaco Lee.
Despite his pledge of an expansive plus-size line, he fails to follow through, only designing garments up to a size 12. This scenario underscores the fact that although the fashion world has evolved, many designers persistently neglect creating clothing for women beyond a size 12. Unfortunately, some even introduce plus-size collections without truly embracing inclusivity.
Many plus-sized women, like myself, eagerly anticipate when high-end or well-known brands introduce collections for larger individuals or expand their existing size ranges. So, I understand Mavis’s enthusiasm when a designer she admires starts producing garments in her size, but feels let down when it turns out that the line isn’t truly intended for plus sizes or offers unflattering clothing.
The final two episodes of this season focus on the issue of limited size diversity in fashion, but Season 2 of ‘Survival of the Thickest’ tackles numerous other problems within the industry, such as addressing ageism and creating a welcoming environment for individuals who don’t fit the conventional beauty standard.

I Love Michelle Buteau’s Fashion
Michelle Buteau truly shines and embodies the zeitgeist. Her stylish flair during Survival of The Thickest has always been captivating and vibrant, but in Season 2, it reaches new heights of eye-catching and breathtaking beauty. One of my favorite ensembles from the season is the one Buteau dons as Mavis in the first episode of Season 2, as she strolls through Italy.
This ensemble is quite straightforward yet beautifully put together, exuding an air of sophistication that flatters the wearer’s silhouette. It’s the kind of attire you might spot on the street and find yourself pausing to appreciate both their fashion sense and eloquence. Among the numerous stylish moments Mavis has created this season, her fashion prowess extends beyond just carefully selected outfits – even when she’s lounging in pajamas or casually at home, she still manages to captivate us with her effortless elegance.
It’s clear that Buteau and the costume team pay attention to fashion details, as evidenced by Mavis’s consistently stylish outfits.

I Feel Like Clothing And Outfits Are Used To Make Statements
Stunning fashion has the power to make an impact, but it can also narrate a tale and allow someone to express their individuality. Similarly, Survival of the Thickest draws inspiration from and pays tribute to iconic Black comedy television shows. Its African-American essence is deeply rooted in its very core.
Consequently, certain fashion instances embody this specific identity, which is evident in characters like Mavis, Khalil (Tone Bell), and Marley (Tasha Smith). Notably, their hairstyles reflect an afrocentric aesthetic. For instance, Mavis and Marley often sport natural hair looks, while Khalil typically wears braids, coils, or locs.
As a film critic, I must say that the latest instalment of “Survival of the Thickest” offers an engaging exploration set against the vibrant backdrop of the Afropunk Festival. The show tastefully pays homage to the unique fashion sense and aesthetic charm of this cultural event. Moreover, it skillfully emphasizes the rich Black culture and sophistication that permeates every corner of the festival, making it a must-watch for anyone seeking an immersive experience into the heart of this captivating celebration.

Mavis’s Business Woes Are Some Of My Favorite Parts Of The Season
A significant aspect of Season 2 in the series “Survival of the Thickest” centers on Marley and Mavis teaming up as business associates. Just like any strong partnership, they encounter numerous challenges. Marley’s forceful personality often conflicts with Mavis’s more laid-back lifestyle and business methods. Nevertheless, they manage to collaborate effectively, grow in mutual respect for each other as entrepreneurs, and make concessions when required.
Survival of the Fittest sheds light on some of the intricacies faced by small-scale entrepreneurs, ranging from acquiring funding to starting up. Although similar scenarios are occasionally depicted in other programs, I found it engaging to view it through the lens of an individual who may not be financially sound or well-versed in money management and business matters.
It’s truly uplifting to witness individuals, even those without an idyllic life or vast wealth, achieving their dreams through perseverance. We could benefit from having more television series featuring protagonists who rise to the challenge of entrepreneurship on such a grand scale.

I Can’t Help But Notice The Marrying Of Fashion And Romance In Survival Of The Thickest
The TV show titled “Survival of the Thickest” is not just a comedy but also a heartwarming romantic comedy. Consequently, romance significantly contributes to its narrative. Noticeably, Mavis’s wardrobe subtly expresses her feelings of affection at any given moment. Similarly, Luca’s fashion transformation throughout the season reflects his evolving artistic and relaxed personality as the series concludes.
At those instances, he transforms into a relaxed embodiment of her romantic ideal. It appears that Luca attempted this approach primarily to win her over. This transformation highlights his readiness to adapt to whatever role she requires when she needs it. The primary source of conflict between Luca and Mavis this season stems from a lack of trust and inability to forgive and progress. Therefore, his appearance and performance during this moment can be seen as a significant act of dedication.
In Survival of the Thickest, Mavis and Luca aren’t unique in adjusting their style based on their relationship dynamics or personal issues. Yet, they are among the pairs whose sartorial choices stand out most distinctly. These fashion decisions effectively illustrate just how crucial fashion is to the storyline of Survival of the Thickest.
The clothing isn’t only about its appearance, but also the message it conveys and how it contributes to the narrative of these characters.
Among the many hidden gems on Netflix, “Survival of the Thickest” stands out as one I’ve recently found truly captivating. What makes it even more appealing is its insightful discussions and perspectives on fashion, making it an ideal choice for a compelling binge-watching experience from my point of view.
