Plans are being made for Alan Cumming‘s reappearance in the X-Men series, marking his debut within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In one of the numerous roles added to the ensemble of Marvel’s “Avengers: Doomsday,” set for release in May 2026, the character portrayed by The Traitors will once again embody Kurt Wagner, also known as Nightcrawler. Cumming has disclosed that he has already participated in makeup trials, these sessions highlighting the significant strides made in special effects makeup over the last two decades since he last donned the blue-skinned mutant’s persona.
Cumming mentioned that he had previously undergone several makeup tests. During an interview on Today with Jenna & Friends, he shared that these sessions used to take around four and a half to five hours, but now they only require approximately 90 minutes.
In 2003, when Alan Cumming portrayed Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United, the intricate tattoos on his character were individually applied because they hadn’t been finalized prior to filming. However, for his role in Doomsday, the process has become more streamlined. He noted that instead of being hand-painted, the distinctive Nightcrawler tattoos are now applied using small stick-on decals, a significant improvement in the application process.
Twice Emmy-winning actor Ian Cumming expressed his surprise at rejoining the X-Men series, now portraying a superhero character at age 60. It’s been 23 years since he last played a superhero role. Cumming mentioned that the production is currently in pre-preparation stages and everyone involved appears quite amiable.
“[Avengers: Doomsday] starts shooting quite soon,” Cumming added. “It’s going to be nuts.”
In the upcoming “Avengers” movie, a multitude of actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s past, present, and future will come together in a single film. On March 26th, Marvel officially revealed a significant portion of the cast for the film titled “Doomsday,” which includes several familiar faces such as Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Letitia Wright (Black Panther), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Danny Ramirez (The Falcon), and Winston Duke (M’Baku. Additionally, Robert Downey Jr. will be seen in a new role as Doctor Doom.
Significantly, the upcoming Doomsday movie will mark a significant collaboration between the Avengers and the X-Men. Actors like Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) who were part of the original 2000 X-Men film, are joining the cast along with Cumming (Nightcrawler) from X2: X-Men United and Kelsey Grammer (Beast) from 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand.
