The Locarno Film Festival’s professional sector, Locarno Pro, is introducing the Locarno Investment Community – a fresh initiative aimed at linking independent film financiers with the European film industry. This project has been created in partnership with Oxbelly, a nonprofit organization from Greece that fosters cooperation between the U.S. and EU through its Ambassadors program. The goal of this new program is to encourage substantial interaction among investors, filmmakers, and industry experts, thereby strengthening Locarno Pro’s position as a central hub for independent cinema.
At Locarno Pro’s debut event, which runs from August 7th to 10th, we will establish a special professional track. This initiative brings financial investors directly into important film industry events and networking chances, granting them an entry to the festival’s lineup and creative minds.
The organizers of Locarno Pro announced that they’ll be warmly receiving experienced investors seeking to broaden their presence in Europe’s movie scene, as well as novice supporters yearning to aid indie films. Investors can expect to connect with rising and established filmmakers, investigate innovative funding approaches, and foster the development of independent cinema.
According to Giona A. Nazzaro, the head of the Locarno Film Festival, as distribution methods evolve worldwide, Locarno stays dedicated to fostering independent voices and establishing itself as a crucial location for film financing. As one of the major A festivals, Locarno is fully invested in creating fresh environments where creativity can thrive. The future of the audiovisual sector, particularly cinema, depends on our capacity to envision innovative business strategies and production techniques that move us confidently forward.
Markus Duffner, head of Locarno Pro, stated: “Locarno Pro has a history of fostering talent, as demonstrated by recent accomplishments such as ‘Flow,’ the animated film by Match Me! graduate Matiss Kaza, which won an Oscar and Golden Globe, and ‘All We Imagine as Light,’ the Cannes Grand Jury Prize-winning film produced by Thomas Hakim, a Locarno Pro alumnus. By integrating the Locarno Investment Community into our current structure, the festival is broadening its connections to provide additional funding avenues.
The goal for the future of this project is to bring on board a group of cinema investors from the United States, Europe, and Switzerland, aiming to maintain their involvement and financial backing in independent film production, as stated by Duffner.
The world’s movie market is changing, and for it to continue growing, we require innovative financing methods – models that benefit both filmmakers and investors, fostering wider involvement and a thriving environment,” stated the executive director of Oxbelly. “In these times of global discord, American film financiers and philanthropists understand the significance of backing diverse independent voices as a means to reshape dominant stories. Their ongoing collaboration in Europe introduces valuable independent film practices from America into an ever-changing European scene.
