Suits LA’s Ratings Have Not Been Great, But Reports Say It Might Get Renewed Because NBC Invested A Lot In Marketing. I Think There’s Another Reason

As we approach May finales in 2025, TV network executives find themselves under increased pressure to decide which shows will be renewed for another season and which ones won’t make a comeback. While proven broadcast favorites like “Shifting Gears” have already been renewed following their first seasons, the fate of NBC’s newcomer “Suits LA,” an unusual spinoff that largely exists due to its parent show’s success in streaming, remains uncertain at this point.

It’s worth noting that NBC has only confirmed renewals for two of its 15 scripted shows, St. Denis Medical and Happy’s Place. However, it’s clear that the network is likely to renew most (if not all) of its Dick Wolf-created shows, including Law & Order: SVU and the One Chicago dramas. This leaves the future of shows like Suits LA uncertain. Congratulations again to St. Denis Medical and Happy’s Place for their early wins!

Why Is Suits LA In Danger Of Cancellation?

Despite being a highly anticipated NBC series in 2024, Suits LA has significantly underperformed in terms of viewership and demo ratings, falling short of the expectations set. The numbers recorded are more fitting for the original show’s run on USA. For example, premieres are typically strong benchmarks for total audience, but the spinoff managed to attract just 2.61 million viewers on its premiere night, with an extra 1.21 million from delayed viewing, totaling 3.82 million viewers. The combined demo rating was a mere 0.3.

The audience size wasn’t a disaster, but it was smaller than NBC may have anticipated during the planning stage. With shows like “The Voice” and “The Irrational” requiring more attention due to an upcoming wave of NBA primetime coverage this fall, including the traditional theme, once that major deal officially begins. Therefore, some shows will likely be canceled to create space on the schedule.

Why Suits LA Will Likely Be Saved From Cancellation

As reported by Deadline, NBC executives are eager to keep the series “Suits LA” running for at least another season due to the significant investment they’ve made in the show and the extensive marketing effort put forth before its premiere. Abandoning it now would mean absorbing a large portion of costs without giving the newcomer enough opportunity to attract an audience.

Additionally, it seems logical given the circumstances, since nobody is eager to squander large sums unnecessarily, I believe there’s a hidden optimism that Suits LA might not only capture and maintain a significant portion of the original show’s fanbase, but also replicate the colossal streaming success that Suits experienced when it premiered on Netflix in 2023.

Previously noted, the show held the top spot on Netflix’s most popular list, significantly increasing the brand’s visibility. However, this success came with some turbulence among cast and crew due to insufficient residual payments. NBC might choose to keep the spinoff under wraps until Netflix makes an acquisition offer, potentially driving interest in the sequel series. Although it’s uncertain how well the show is performing on Peacock, if it was thriving, we likely would have heard about it by now.

It’s quite probable that the fact Suits LA is a legal drama and doesn’t rely heavily on elaborate stunt scenes or heavy CGI effects is beneficial. However, with a star-studded cast boasting Stephen Amell and veteran Gabriel Macht, it’s unlikely this show is among the least expensive on the network. Still, as long as production costs don’t outweigh viewer engagement, there’s optimism for Season 2!

Suits LA airs Sunday nights on NBC at 9:00 p.m. ET.
