The Halloween special “Werewolf by Night” on Disney+ stands out as an exceptional and distinct Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) production during Marvel’s current less successful phase. This black-and-white special was a refreshing change for both MCU and comic book enthusiasts, offering a unique atmosphere unlike any other project due to its serious tone and visually stunning yet subdued aesthetics. For horror fans, it was an exciting spree of monster hunting, monster collectibles, and of course, monsters – with the legendary Man-Thing making an appearance. Some might have assumed that Jack Russell’s impressive display was a one-time event, but director Michael Giacchino has hinted at potential continuation for “Werewolf by Night,” provided Disney gives its approval.
It’s not unexpected that the unique production became a success given that skilled composer, Marco Giacchino, known for popular Disney works such as Up, The Incredibles, and the forthcoming MCU film The Fantastic Four: First Steps, contributed to it. With Giacchino now delving into the comic realm to further Russell’s werewolf tale through a new series called Werewolf by Night: Blood Moon Rise, where an ’70s Russell will encounter Dracula, the special has resurfaced in discussions. Although his comics aren’t linked to his Disney+ project, he expressed interest to EW in expanding on the live-action aspect of Werewolf by Night.
I have an idea for expanding our TV story, but it doesn’t quite fit with the current storyline of Jack in the Marvel comics universe. It requires some maneuvering to find a suitable place for it. Honestly, I’m very keen on making another ‘Werewolf by Night’ special. We’re just waiting for the industry to stabilize and define its new normal before we decide on the next steps.
Michael Giacchino Is Not Waiting on Disney
As a movie enthusiast who thrives on creativity, I can’t help but keep myself engrossed in various projects. When I’m not crafting unforgettable film scores, you’ll find me delving into the thrilling world of my own Werewolf by Night comic series and reimagining a classic horror tale. Currently, I’m deep in the planning stages for my directorial debut – an unexpected take on the 1954 sci-fi movie, Them!. This timeless black-and-white film revolves around colossal, man-eating ants and the fear they instill. Given my affinity for monster-centric media, this project appears to be a perfect fit, doesn’t it? However, I aim to demonstrate versatility in my directorial ventures, ensuring that I’m not just a one-trick pony.
I strive to avoid becoming a person who constantly repeats the same creative task. Instead, I’m always seeking out new, enjoyable activities to engage in.
Michael Giacchino’s extensive portfolio, spanning works such as “Ratatouille,” “Thor: Love and Thunder,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” clearly demonstrates his versatility as a composer. It’s unlikely he’ll need to go the extra mile to prove this point. However, since the Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently evolving at a rapid pace, the release of the follow-up to “Werewolf by Night” might be delayed. Nevertheless, there’s a strong possibility that it could be on the horizon once Disney clarifies their future plans, which ideally will include more captivating specials.
