It appears that discussions surrounding Scream 7 are centered around honesty this week. The narrative began with Jenna Ortega disclosing that her departure from the seventh installment wasn’t due to scheduling or payment disagreements, but rather the complications arising from Melissa Barrera’s dismissal and the desire to work with the team she had grown accustomed to. Now, the director initially slated for the project has shared some insights about his departure and the circumstances imply a darker side of the fanbase.
During an interview with the Evolution of Horror Podcast, Landon openly discussed his departure from the project, and it’s clear that the outcome still resonates with him due to his strong desire to be part of the film. Nevertheless, he feels that Kevin Williamson was the ideal choice to direct Scream 7 as only he could convince some of the original cast members to return. However, he acknowledges that he encountered a disturbing aspect of fandom when his family started receiving death threats.
It was an extremely challenging and agonizing predicament for everyone, and I’m emphasizing that everyone was affected. Now that I reflect on it, it makes perfect sense that Kevin had to take the helm. He was the only one capable of gathering all those cast members together. None of them were willing to participate in the movie unless Kevin was in charge. The toughest part for me was confronting the unsavory aspects of fandom and dealing with threats against my children, which is truly distressing when it stems from a simple film.
Signing Onto ‘Scream 7’ Became a Toxic Experience For the Director
Initially, Landon took over from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who directed Scream 7 following their work on Scream (2022) and Scream VI. This collaboration appeared perfect given Landon’s style aligning well with the Scream series’ tone. However, the harmony didn’t last long; it unraveled just as swiftly as it was established. The dismissal of Barrera due to controversial antisemitic posts by Spyglass Media Group and Ortega’s departure shortly after created a toxic atmosphere among fans. This negativity seemed to intensify with each passing day, causing widespread concern within the fan community.
Landon shared in December 2023 that he was stepping away from the film, a choice he made independently, even though the studio hoped he would continue and add his unique touch to the project, steering it towards a fresh path. Despite feeling sad about leaving what had been one of his dream roles, he understood that he needed to move on due to the distressing treatment he received from certain sections of the fanbase, which threatened both his mental well-being and the safety of his family.
They urged me to carry on, essentially telling me, “You can pick up where you left off. You can find a way.” However, the level of mistreatment I encountered made me realize that I didn’t want to invest any more of myself in it. To me, it wasn’t worth the trouble. Instead, I chose to channel my energy into something else, where I could experience admiration and respect. The hostility and abuse tainted my enthusiasm for the concept, and my passion for it waned.
In his latest movie titled “Drop”, those efforts were invested, which at the moment boasts an impressive 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after its well-received debut at the SXSW Film Festival. This weekend, this first date-gone-wrong thriller is set to premiere, and it seems that it’s shaping up to be a blockbuster success. It’s rewarding to observe Landon utilizing his skills and passion in something meaningful for himself, rather than having to navigate through a fandom that has shown signs of toxicity on numerous occasions. Success can indeed serve as the best form of revenge.
