Ben Browder Almost Played 2 Different Stargate Atlantis Roles Before Joining SG-1

Over the course of Stargate SG-1’s ten-year span, there were many significant shifts, particularly with the introduction of Ben Browder, a previous star from Farscape, as Cam Mitchell, who took over as leader of the main SG-1 team in the show’s closing acts.

Did you realize that prior to becoming Cam Mitchell, Browder played roles as two different characters within the Stargate universe? To be more precise, these were characters from the Stargate Atlantis spin-off series.

Did you realize that James Earl Jones, a renowned Star Wars actor, secretly played a role in Stargate SG-1? Claudia Black discusses the distinction between her roles in Farscape and Stargate SG-1. Additionally, it was almost inevitable for Stargate SG-1 to have a spinoff during its fifth season.

As he penned down his blog post, series producer Joseph Mallozmi reminisced about the history and production details that ultimately led Michael Browder into the realm of Stargate.

Ben Browder’s Stargate roles explained

It’s worth noting that Browder was among those considered for the lead role in Stargate Atlantis as John Sheppard. However, the part ultimately went to Joe Flanigan since at that time, Browder was occupied with filming the Farscape miniseries The Peacekeeper Wars and couldn’t accommodate the pilot and early shooting schedule. According to Mallozzi (via Gateworld), if circumstances had been different, Browder would have been an excellent John Sheppard, embodying the Southern cowboy persona as initially conceived for the Atlantis pilot; fortunately, Flanigan proved more than capable of filling the role admirably.

As a passionate fan, I can tell you that after failing to launch Atlantis earlier in the series, the creators attempted to bring Browder on board during the latter stages of the show, particularly when they introduced Colonel Dillon Everett as a new military leader. This character clashed with the existing leadership in Atlantis when he led a team to defend the city against a Wraith assault following the reestablishment of communication with Earth.

Unfortunately, Browder’s schedule didn’t align with the series’ timeline, causing the role to be given to Clayton Landey instead. With Browder not taking on the role, Everett’s storyline was brief, as the character sustained an injury and returned to Earth promptly. However, had Browder been cast, Mallozzi hinted that Everett’s character arc would have evolved substantially, potentially growing into a more prominent figure within the show.

Despite it being unfortunate that Browder didn’t become part of the Atlantis cast, things ultimately turned out well for him as he later landed a co-starring role in SG-1, portraying Mitchell and leading the primary team in their struggle against the Ori. Additionally, following the conclusion of SG-1, there were direct-to-DVD sequel films that continued his storyline.

Browder didn’t end up on the Atlantis cast, but he found success elsewhere when he secured a role in SG-1 as Mitchell and led the team against the Ori. Afterwards, there were direct-to-DVD sequel films that continued his character’s storyline following the end of SG-1.
