Lately, the artist has shared her thoughts on the podcast “On Purpose” with Jay Shetty. In this conversation, she discussed that her decision to retreat from the limelight after the controversy was an effort to safeguard her tranquility, or in other words, preserve her peace of mind.
Lizzo previously decided to step away from public appearances and media interviews, as she was off-cycle with her album. However, since her album has been completed, she felt it necessary to return to work. After all, being a musician is her profession.
The artist behind “About Damn Time” went on to say, “However, this situation seems particularly significant because at the same moment, I found myself planning a trip to Japan, specifically Kyoto, intending to immerse myself in nature and essentially vanish. Coincidentally, a major scandal also surfaced around the same time.
In August 2023, several ex-backup dancers of Lizzo initiated a lawsuit, asserting that they experienced sexual harassment and endured a toxic work environment. The musician contested these claims, subsequently trying to dismantle the case, but was unsuccessful. Instead, the legal battle persists.
Instead of seeming like she was being silenced or hiding, it turned out that her statement referred to wrapping up the promotional phase for her 2022 album titled “Special”.

In October 2023, the singer famously known as “Still Bad” came back home from Japan and immediately resumed working on new music in the studio. Unexpectedly, around the same period, she was unexpectedly overwhelmed by a surge of anxiety that had been hidden after the recent scandal.
Upon landing in Los Angeles, Lizzo realized the extent of her emotional strain as she had been trying to keep up a positive front for others. This was her first experience with a panic attack, which struck her while she was on her way home from the airport. She recalled feeling uneasy about her chest and recognized that despite years of dealing with anxiety, this sensation was distinctly new.
She commented, “I had this idea cross my mind, I found myself thinking, ‘Everyone seems to dislike me. Everyone appears to despise me for something unfounded.’ However, given the role I occupy, everyone dislikes me and there’s little that can be done to change it.
Consequently, Lizzo admitted that she swiftly ended up in a “bleak” state, feeling “afraid of others.” However, once she mustered the bravery to re-enter society and establish connections with people, it significantly influenced her forthcoming album, Love in Real Life.
She shared that she’s dealing with some incredibly challenging situations, but she’s managing because she transforms those hardships into something valuable – wisdom, purpose, and acts of defiant joy. This, she considers her life’s goal.
