The Emmy-winning series continues right after the thrilling finale of Season 3, where Ava (played by Hannah Einbinder), a comedy writer, successfully blackmailed her boss, the legendary Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), into hiring her as head writer for Deborah’s new late-night talk show. This unexpected twist propels the comedy to unprecedented heights, immersing Deborah and Ava in a scorching and intricate predicament that unfolds in Hacks Season 4.

Previously, these women had disagreements, but nothing as intense as what we’re witnessing now. As the story unfolds in the first two episodes, tension simmers, glares turn sharp, and resentment intensifies. At one point, Deborah snaps, “Why don’t you ask that person what really happened,” referring to Ava, who is as sharp-witted as the icon she’s long admired but never truly managed to impress. In the early episodes of this season, the women are seen striding quickly along a corridor when Ava retorts: “Are you and Mary Magdalene in a race for the title of ‘oldest harlot on earth?’

Wow, that was quite a punch, but boy, it’s been an entertaining ride! At first glance, one might worry that the rest of the season would devolve into a prolonged spat between these two friends-turned-rivals. However, Hacks proves its intelligence by avoiding such a predictable path. The verbal jabs may be sharp, but they have their limits. In Season 4, the creators/showrunners Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky, and Paul W. Downs (who plays Jimmy on the show) are truly hitting their stride. This team is so assured and skilled in their craft, it shines through. And the lead actors, especially Smart, are delivering exceptional performances—she’s a strong contender for another Emmy win, having already claimed three. Simply put, Season 4 of Hacks is the series’ finest yet. It’s daring, bold, and brilliant.

I Hate You. Now Let’s Get Down to Business

It’s understandable that Ava isn’t being blamed for aspiring for the head writer role that Deborah had promised her earlier. And with Ava ready to reveal Deborah’s past affair with media executive Bob Lipka (Tony Goldwyn) before their late-night deal was finalized, Deborah finds herself in a tight spot. However, she won’t let Ava, whom she calls the “red-haired Judas,” sabotage her ambition. Their arguments eventually subside due to a somber conversation over dinner with network executive Winnie Landell (Helen Hunt), who reminds them both that the show transcends their personal differences and that late-night television is currently vulnerable.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but appreciate the clever shift in a captivating season that peels back the curtains on the intricate process of producing a late-night talk show. This season doesn’t just stop at entertaining us; it pushes our favorite characters, Deborah and Ava, into another phase of character development. Despite their newfound success, they find themselves embarking on yet another challenging journey that demands collaboration.

Even though Deborah might feel like she’s reached the pinnacle of her career, she knows full well that there are tough times ahead. As sharp-tongued and vulnerable as ever, Deborah must temporarily put aside their differences and form an alliance with Ava to make this work. It’s not a partnership either might have envisioned, but it seems unavoidable if they want to get things right.

As a fan, I can’t help but be thrilled by the unfolding events in Season 4. One reason it stands out is because it feels so new and invigorating. Moving Deborah from her cozy Las Vegas environment into the cutthroat world of Hollywood adds an exciting twist, making the series even more vibrant. Fresh characters are also introduced, giving the show a completely revitalized feel. I can’t help but think that this show could easily continue for three to four more seasons now.

New Faces, New Story Arcs

Michaela Watkins, the HR executive, is concerned about the strained relationship between Deborah and Ava. The standout character this season is Robby Hoffman, who plays Jimmy and Kayla’s new assistant Randi. Randi is both Type A organized and absurdly funny at the same time. Matt Oberg delivers a strong performance as another executive on the show, while Mark Indelicato brings a captivating charm to Damien, Deborah’s personal assistant Marcus. It was foreshadowed in Season 3 that Marcus might be leaving his position as Deborah’s right-hand man. Keep an eye out for Jane Adams this season, who will be portraying Deborah’s psychic. The best line of the show so far is: “A lot of sad divorced men have sat in these chairs.

It’s clear that this TV series, Hacks, is one of the greatest modern comedies ever made, and as we reach Season 4, it shows no signs of slowing down. Unlike other comedies, it doesn’t seem to tire or lose its edge. Instead, Hacks stands out as the best comedy of this decade thus far. The writing continues to be sharp, and the actors deliver dialogue that is quick and crisp. If Hannah Einbinder doesn’t win an Emmy for her performance this season, Deborah Vance could certainly set things straight. Einbinder delivers a stunning performance this season, portraying Ava’s journey with such precision that the character becomes even more relatable.

Jean Smart Hacks It Like Nobody Else

Additionally, we find Jean Smart in the spotlight. This Emmy award recipient has consistently radiated self-assuredness and ease within her character, but this season, she truly shines as Deborah navigates another tumultuous creative whirlpool, a part of an ongoing journey spanning several decades that demands her to repeatedly validate herself. The portrayal is sharp, sassy, and absolutely captivating.

Pay attention to an intriguing narrative arc about coyotes in this season’s storyline, suggesting Deborah might be under threat at work by her rivals – much like coyotes are often seen as threats to wolves. Additionally, a storyline involving a writers’ retreat in Las Vegas puts Deborah in the midst of younger colleagues and a new medium. Expect numerous impressive guest appearances throughout this season filled with laughter and unforgettable moments. The last episode is especially noteworthy.
