Nightmare at the Movies: Meta’s ‘M3GAN’ Screening Tech Gone Wrong

As a firm believer in Meta’s innovative spirit, I can’t help but be excited about their latest venture. Just like other tech companies, they’re always striving to find new avenues for integration into our daily lives. Their newest endeavor is taking them to the heart of entertainment – the cinemas. They’ve planned a special screening of M3GAN —and perhaps Ma and Annabelle — , introducing their brand new “Movie Mate” technology. This innovative tech enables viewers to ‘interact’ with the movie using their smartphones, offering glimpses into behind-the-scenes moments, trivia, and even more potential surprises. It’s a fascinating step towards blending reality and entertainment in an entirely new way!

The new technology, only accessible in cinemas and via Instagram, is being utilized to boost the upcoming sequel of M3GAN, as well as serve as a pre-Halloween celebration. But don’t be deceived by the corporate cheerfulness and artistic fanfare; from a business perspective, this move aims to incorporate Meta into the movie-watching experience, thereby boosting revenue and reach. If “Movie Mate” doesn’t prove to be an ally, it could turn into a scary situation for cinemas.

Theaters Are Already Becoming a Battleground

It seems somewhat exaggerated, but it’s fair to say that the theater experience has turned into a contested ground between traditional and modern movie enthusiasts. To put it bluntly, going to the theater is losing its appeal for many film fans these days, largely because of the diminishing difference between cinema and streaming platforms, and the growing disdain towards the environment.

However, not every experience will be a negative one. Unfortunately, some recent events have soured the anticipation for theaters. For instance, screenings of movies like the “Minecraft Movie” have turned into TikTok spectacles, with audiences shouting at the screen and leaving behind messes that would put a pigsty to shame (and occasionally vomit). Similarly, unexpected sing-alongs during shows like “Wicked” have added to the disenchantment.

In the past, there appeared to be some shared etiquette in movie theaters, where even when watching a film like “A Minecraft Movie,” which might not be highly regarded, one could anticipate a minor level of disruption. However, it seems that nowadays, the theater environment has shifted towards a more laissez-faire attitude, encouraged by theaters and companies aiming to boost profits. This change means that some moviegoers may experience a less enjoyable experience due to a lack of basic considerations, such as not needing an entire, greasy meal in the theater.

Meta Wants You on Your Phone in the Theater

In today’s digital age, turning off your cell phone in a theater was once considered common courtesy, but nowadays, with our increasing reliance on electronic devices and the desire to stay connected, this rule has become more lenient. However, let’s not forget that these devices can be distracting.

As for Gen Z, it’s true they have shorter attention spans compared to previous generations, typically less than 8 seconds. While some might argue normalizing their use in the theater could make this a more accepted part of the experience, it could also lead to concern about the impact of technology on our behavior.

So, when it comes to learning or internalizing information while in a group, it’s not unreasonable to expect that the M3GAN re-screenings might be noisy.

Some might argue that a movie, once released, serves as an enrichment for a single event. However, this isn’t always the truth. In today’s world, businesses often find sneaky ways to insert themselves unnecessarily and maximize their gains. The movie ‘Movie Mate’ seems to be a prime example of this trend.

Imagine that in a decade, going to the cinema might mean children watching an ad on their phones before moving on to another level of a game sponsored by the film they are supposed to be watching. The audience at ‘M3GAN’ re-screenings might find the experience more horrifying than the movie itself. I plan to give it a miss, and I recommend you do the same.
