Prime Video is looking to bring the world of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to TV screens.
Amazon Studios, which is part of Amazon’s family, and Sony Pictures Television are collaborating to create a television series inspired by the Crane-Iron Pentalogy novels penned by Wang Dulu. These books were also the foundation for Ang Lee’s critically acclaimed movie that won an Oscar in 2000.
Jason Ning, known for his works like “Lucifer” and “The Brother Sun”, is set to write and serve as executive producer. He will be working alongside Ron Moore, renowned for shows such as “Outlander” and “Battlestar Galactica”. Both of them have extensive contracts with Sony, the company that distributed “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” through its Sony Pictures Classics label and holds the rights to the Crane-Iron books.
The proposed series title, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” unfolds a captivating tale set against breathtaking scenery and thrilling action. It tells the story of two warrior souls, Shu Lien and Mu Bai, who find themselves entangled in a complex web of forbidden love and the tug-of-war between tradition and the allure of modernity. They must decide whether to cling to their ancient ways or embark on a journey towards an uncertain future together.
In Lee’s movie titled Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-Fat took on the leading roles, while Zhang Ziyi joined them in the cast. This remarkable film garnered four Oscars in 2001 for its outstanding achievements in best foreign language film, cinematography, art direction, and original score. Lee received a nomination for best director, and the movie was also recognized with a nomination for best picture.
Ning and Moore, through their production company Tall Ship Productions, will join forces with Johnny Levin, Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment, Maril Davis also from Tall Ship Productions, as well as Hong Wang and Qin Wang representing the Wang Dulu estate, in serving as executive producers for this project. Ying Lou is taking on a co-executive producer role.
