Following some unexpected and lengthy postponements, movie enthusiasts are almost at the point of witnessing a massive box office hit, scheduled for 2025 – namely, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. After the 2023 release of Dead Reckoning, it’s speculated that this eighth installment, M:I 8, might mark the end of Ethan Hunt and his team, a group we’ve followed for many years. Before we possibly say goodbye to the series (and Tom Cruise), Simon Pegg wants to make one thing crystal clear regarding the star.
What Did Simon Pegg Say About Tom Cruise And His Work In The Mission: Impossible Movies?
Regardless if you’ve watched any of the Mission: Impossible films, there are two things you probably already know about them: Tom Cruise is the main actor and he consistently pushes the limits with daring stunts that have become iconic in the realm of action movie franchises. Simon Pegg, who has played tech expert Benji Dunn since Mission: Impossible 3 (released 19 years ago), has been a recurring character throughout most of them.
In a chat with Collider, the performer from The Boys shared insights about the upcoming film. When questioned whether Benji would be involved in more action this time, he chose to clarify the extensive efforts Tom Cruise invests in his movie series.
Tom doesn’t do most of his stunts, he does ALL of his stunts.
Indeed, if you’ve ever pondered whether Tom Cruise performed all those high-speed chases, motorbike leaps off cliffs, and death-defying mountain climbs in the M:I series himself, Simon Pegg has clarified that it’s indeed him pushing the limits. In fact, he even shared an instance where he fainted during a stunt at 10,000 feet while hanging from a plane. Pegg further added…
Our guiding principle is: authentic stunts make the difference. When we entrust a scene to a stunt artist, the focus shifts from the character to the daring feat. Tom and McQ understand that these moments will be even more thrilling if it’s the actor in danger, as the character remains relatable throughout. Regarding Benji’s impressive stunts in this movie, as TC often puts it, don’t forget to catch us at the cinema!
As director Christopher McQuarrie pointed out earlier, unlike many action movie directors who must hide the fact that their stars aren’t performing dangerous stunts like leaping between a moving train and a helicopter (which Cruise did for the first M:I film), McQuarrie ensures that every camera catches Tom Cruise doing all the actions we see as Ethan Hunt. Furthermore, it’s indisputable that this authenticity has only served to make the Mission: Impossible series even more captivating to behold.
