Noah Wyle’s COVID-19 Revelation: Why He Returned to Playing a Doctor in ‘The Pitt’

The medical series “The Pitt” is wrapping up its impressive first season, and star Noah Wyle has been garnering long-overdue recognition. Known for portraying Dr. John Carter on the NBC procedural “ER” for over a decade, Wyle initially felt hesitant about diving back into the medical drama realm. However, a real-life incident served as inspiration and eventually convinced him to take on the role of Dr. Robby. Onwards, Dr. Robby!

In an interview with Variety, Wyle shared his experience playing Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch in the Max series, which unfolds during one chaotic shift at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital ER. Despite being touted as a potential award contender, Wyle initially felt uneasy about reprising a medical role: “I wouldn’t touch a script for a doctor character, not even if it was about a veterinarian. The thought of donning a stethoscope around my neck seemed terribly unappealing.” He also recounted a personal struggle in 2020 when he felt unsure about his ability to make a significant or valuable contribution.

During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the actor started getting numerous Instagram messages. Medical professionals were among those reaching out, expressing concerns like “Carter, where are you? Things are tough here.” This sentiment, as shared by Wyle, was one of the motivations behind creating The Pitt, a show with some resemblance to ER. However, this production has become the subject of a lawsuit, with Wyle, the showrunners, and Warner Bros. TV being accused of plagiarizing a canceled revival of the ’90s medical drama.

Wyle shares that the 2020 health emergency triggered him to reconsider returning as a TV doctor. He explains, “It struck me that I could utilize Carter much like I did earlier, expressing my current feelings.” This refers to his ER character that garnered several Golden Globe and Emmy nominations during the series’ run. Wyle additionally expressed his frank views on the healthcare sector, noting some skepticism towards medical advice that played a crucial role in managing the most significant modern health crisis.

“It angers me deeply to see these selfless individuals having their abilities doubted, particularly when it comes to matters of public health. It angers me that we’re still debating whether masks reduce the spread of illness. It angers me that we’re slow to accept that masks can help in disease control. It angers me that we’re still hesitant to admit the crucial role vaccines play in eradicating diseases. All these things leave me frustrated with our current situation.

So I wanted to make a show that brings back into sharp focus what an objective medical fact is.

In the series, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic plays a crucial role. Dr. Robby grapples with PTSD as he was compelled to make some extremely difficult choices during the pandemic, and these events continue to weigh heavily on him. Additionally, Wyle’s views on vaccinations are woven into Robby’s narrative, particularly when, in the closing episodes, the main character encounters parents who refused to vaccinate their daughter against measles, mumps, and rubella. His response is heartfelt and highly relevant.

‘The Pitt’ Season 1 Comes to an End After a Jarring Time at the Busy ER

Tomorrow on Max, the first season finale of “The Pitt” is set to air. Lastly, the day crew in the emergency room will have their well-deserved break from duty. Will Dr. Langdon be dismissed early again? Will justice prevail following the brutal attack on Nurse Evans? Is there a solution coming up for Dr. McKay’s legal troubles? Many unanswered questions remain, and just one hour to provide all the answers.

Luckily, “The Pitt” is coming back for Season 2, and it won’t be too long before its return, as the series has been announced to make a comeback in January 2026. However, there’s no word yet whether “The Pitt” will carry on after Season 2. Moreover, actor Jason Wyle hinted that Dr. Robby might remain the leader for an extended period: “If all goes well, this show could last several seasons, allowing us to take our time with his leadership journey. It’s a captivating path he’s about to embark on.”

The final episode of The Pitt Season 1 airs Thursday, April 10 at 9 pm ET on Max.
