As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve got my eyes on Amazon’s ambitious project – the reimagining of Sony Pictures Television’s ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’. This series, stemming from the Crane-Iron Series by the gifted novelist Wang Dulu, is a spin-off from the 2000 Ang Lee film. The creative minds behind this production include Jason Ning, known for his work on ‘Lucifer’ and ‘Mrs. Davis’, and the illustrious Ronald D. Moore, whose impressive resume includes ‘Outlander’ and ‘Battlestar Galactica’. I can hardly wait to see how they bring this martial arts epic to life!
This series has been under development since 2023. Moore joined Ning’s concept around last year, as reported exclusively by Deadline. Both Moore and Ning have ongoing contracts with Sony Pictures Television and collaborated on the expansive science fiction series The Expanse back in 2016. Since then, Moore has produced shows like For All Mankind, while Ning wrote multiple episodes of Mrs. Davis and served as a co-executive producer on The Brothers Sun. Notably, this Netflix series features Michelle Yeoh, who previously played Yu Shu Lien in Ang Lee’s adaptation of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It’s difficult to overlook the connections between these projects, isn’t it?
As a cinephile immersed in the intricate world of martial arts cinema, I’m thrilled to share that the much-anticipated TV adaptation of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” is on the horizon. This captivating series will delve into the rich tapestry of all five novels from Dulu’s acclaimed Crane-Iron series, with “Crouching Tiger” being the fourth chapter.
These interwoven tales span four generations of youxia, the ancient Chinese wanderers of legend. Each novel weaves a unique thread in this epic narrative, yet they are intrinsically connected, making them perfectly suited for the engaging, expansive format of television storytelling. I, for one, can hardly wait to lose myself in this mesmerizing saga once more!
The New ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ Will Likely Look Quite Different
19th-century China, during the Qing Dynasty, serves as the backdrop for this film. The story revolves around the legendary warrior, Li Mu Bai (portrayed by Chow Yun-Fat), and his beloved partner, Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh). When Li entrusts her with safeguarding his treasured sword, The Green Destiny, it eventually gets stolen by a secretive thief. In response, Li embarks on a quest to recover the sword, drawing Yu Shu Lien along for an unforgettable adventure that encompasses love, deception, and abundant martial arts combat.
If you’re anticipating a remake of Lee’s 2000 film or something similar to the Netflix movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Sword of Destiny”, you might want to reconsider your expectations. Although the Lee film incorporated aspects from other books in the series and made numerous adjustments to the novel, it was essentially pitched as a modern take on Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility,” but with martial arts. As for “The Sword of Destiny”, it mainly revolved around the storyline in the final book, “Iron Knight, Silver Vase.” However, there are still three other books in Lulu’s series that have not been adapted for any screen medium yet.
In addition to Ning and Moore, the series is being executive produced by Maril Davis from Tall Ship Productions, Johnny Levin, Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment, Hong Wang and Qin Wang from the Wang Dulu Estate. Ying Lou shares the role of co-executive producer.
