Superman’s Isabela Merced Shares One Way Playing Hawkgirl Was A Big Improvement Over Her Time On Madame Web: ‘It’s A Lot’

David Corenswet’s portrayal of Clark Kent is the main attraction in James Gunn’s Superman, but he’s not the only superhero getting their moment in the spotlight. Alongside him are Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl. Similar to her fellow cast members, Merced had previous experience with superhero media before being cast in Superman, but there was a significant Enhancement in portraying Hawkgirl compared to her time on Madame Web.

During her chat with Entertainment Weekly, Merced subtly mentioned that she had the opportunity to wear a costume in the upcoming DC film, Madame Web. Reflecting on the experience, she shared that she portrayed the character Anya Corazón.

Experiencing the super suit wasn’t enjoyable at all. It required constant adjustments to maintain a balance between looking cool, aggressive, and smooth, all while being cramped up in a tight suit and wearing a harness. It was overwhelming, to say the least.

Isabela Merced didn’t wear her costume for an extended period because the character of Madame Web only featured quick glimpses of Anya (played by Sydney Sweeney), Julia Cornwall (Celeste O’Connor), Mattie Franklin, and Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) in their costumes. Despite this brief time, Merced mentioned she felt uncomfortable during filming. Fortunately for her, given the critical and commercial failure of Madame Web, it’s highly unlikely that Merced will reprise the role of Anya in future productions.

As a movie critic stepping into the shoes of Hawkgirl during the main filming of Superman, let me tell you, donning that costume was no walk in the park. With my time in it stretching longer than usual, I found solace knowing that many others were sharing the same challenge. In the words of the star of Alien: Romulus, we were all in the same boat, and that made things a bit easier.

We experienced it collectively, taking turns fanning one another during the sweltering summer days when we were all geared up, right smack in the heart of Cleveland.

It’s crucial that everyone helps each other out, isn’t it? In this case, Isabela Merced spent significantly more time in harnesses than her fellow actors, with the potential exception of David Corenswet. However, she found no issue with this part of portraying Hawkgirl. She clarified:

Isabela Merced had to use harnesses a lot more than her co-actors, perhaps only David Corenswet didn’t share the same experience. But she didn’t mind it when playing Hawkgirl. She explained why.

In most instances, I find myself soaring through the air. That’s thrilling for me since I’m a lover of adrenaline rushes. One thing that particularly excites me is being let go from great heights. Surprisingly, it ranks high among my favorite activities.

In the upcoming series “Superman”, Hawkgirl appears to form a team with Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific, and Metamorpho. However, it remains unclear how exactly they will fit into the storyline. If “Superman” turns out to be a hit, it’s likely this is just the beginning of Fillion’s role as Hawkgirl in the world of DC superheroes. Given that Fillion is set to reprise his role as Guy Gardner in the upcoming series “Lanterns”, premiering on HBO in early 2026, it’s possible we might see Hawkgirl popping up in other parts of the DC Universe as well.

Currently, the movie “Superman” is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Meanwhile, Isabela Merced will appear as Dina in “The Last of Us” Season 2, debuting on HBO on April 13.
