Inquiries regarding “Yellowjackets” characters such as Antler Queen, Pit Girl, Lottie’s murderer, and Shauna’s next move have been lingering since the first episode. The answers to these questions are finally revealed in the season three finale. The ending is intense and hints at a potential fourth season, although it has not yet been officially confirmed.
In the current scenario, the storyline unfolds as the women grapple with the consequences of Van’s (Lauren Ambrose) demise. Meanwhile, in flashbacks set in the wilderness, the women are readying themselves for another hunting expedition. Each moment is jarring yet offers a significant and satisfying resolution to long-standing plotlines.
The Queen of Hearts Game To Remember
In the wilderness, Akilah (Nia Sondaya) feels devastated upon waking to discover all the animals lifeless, just as she had foreseen in a vision not too long ago. The women interpret this as a warning. The wilderness demands a tribute, but it must be something or rather someone they hold dear. It’s time for them to engage in the game once more.
As a dedicated movie fan, let me rephrase that scene for you: I managed to talk Van into manipulating the deck so Hannah would draw the Queen of Hearts. You see, he’s done this kind of thing before, but only for minor chores like emptying the trash bucket. She hesitates at first, but eventually goes along with it. However, things take an unexpected turn when Shauna steps in between two other girls to draw a second card, even though she’d already had her turn. In the end, it’s Mari who ends up pulling the crucial card instead of Hannah.
In this scenario, it’s clear from Mari’s panicked dash through the woods and her discarding of her bright attire, making herself harder to track, that Mari is undeniably the enigmatic Pit Girl who was first glimpsed in the initial episode. As we saw earlier, she ultimately tumbles into the pit, thus becoming the most recent offering.
In this poignant scene, as women mourn her passing, Shauna calmly queries about the delay since they have a feast to organize. The women are observed preparing and serving Mari’s body while a pair of horns and a veil are placed on Shauna’s head. It is disclosed in this instance that Shauna assumes the role of the Antler Queen.
The Walls Are Closing in on Shauna
Currently, Shauna escorts Tai (Tawny Cypress) to lay Van’s remains to rest. Yet, prior to parting ways, Tai cruelly removes and consumes Van’s heart. This unsettling moment establishes the episode’s atmosphere and underscores the depth of their disturbance. If we found Shauna nibbling on Melissa’s (Hilary Swank) arm and attempting to force-feed it distressing, this act surpasses that level of horror.
In another part of the story, Misty (Christina Ricci) challenges Callie (Sarah Desjardins) since she has cracked the case and discovered that it was Callie who murdered Lottie. As Callie uncovered that Lottie had taken a video sent by Melissa (which Callie had hidden from her mother), she decided to retrieve it. The conversation escalated, with Lottie having one of her fits at the time. In a fit of anger, Callie shoved Lottie down the stairs, resulting in her fatal fall.
As I ponder over my words, I can’t help but feel a sense of unease. Though I vowed not to betray Callie, I hinted at confiding in Jeff about her predicament. The weight of the secret weighed heavily on Callie, and with a heavy heart, she chose to confess. Her father stood by her side, offering unwavering support, but the darkness that Shauna had cast upon us was undeniable.
With a sense of finality, we gathered our belongings from the house and left. As I gazed back at the empty dwelling, I could feel the emptiness gnawing at my soul. Upon her return, Shauna found solace in her home, only to be met with heartache. With tear-filled eyes, she asked me what had transpired, and I chose to lay bare the truth before her.
In response to her frantic texts, Jeff assured us that we were safe but requested some time for themselves to process this unexpected turn of events. The silence that followed was deafening, as we awaited their next move with bated breath.
The Adult Timeline Ending
In the final act, tales from then and now intertwine: As Shauna is being coronated as Antler Queen, an adult Shauna finds herself solitary at home, heartbroken over her family’s situation. While in the kitchen, she stumbles upon a note hidden under her fridge. It was indeed the one Melissa claimed to have included with the tape. Melissa wasn’t deceiving; the surprise discovery was due to Jeff scaring Callie while she was opening the letter, causing it to fall and slide beneath the fridge, where it remained concealed until now.
Shauna takes a look at the note, and certain phrases stand out to her: Melissa requests Shauna to find forgiveness for herself. This leaves Shauna confused as to why. With growing anger, she tears up the message and throws it away in the bin, followed by emotional breakdown. However, she swiftly regains her composure, grabs a pen and opens her journal, preparing to write down her thoughts.
She’s not just regaining numerous forgotten events from her time in the wilderness, but she’s also discovering why she might have unconsciously suppressed those memories initially. It seems it wasn’t because they were distressing; instead, she believes that everyone may have forgotten specific details because they were having such a good time and were reluctant to acknowledge that fact to themselves. This is the truth they had left behind in their enjoyment.
Above all, Shauna recalls the influence she once wielded and her desire to reclaim it. Out in the world, she wasn’t tied by marriage or motherhood. Instead, she wrote, “I was a warrior.” “I was a queen.” Shauna had let that power slip away, but now it was time for her to regain control once more.
A Way Out of the Wilderness
Meanwhile, in the wilderness, Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) manages to slip away unnoticed. Having found out where the satellite phone is concealed, she picks it up along with the transponder that Misty (Samantha Hanratty) had been carrying. She makes her way to the summit of a hill, links up with the radio, and calls out for help, hoping someone can hear her. As her anxiety grows, Natalie is on the verge of giving up when she finally hears static and a voice from the other side saying, “I can pick up your signal.
Considering the circumstances surrounding the Yellowjackets, it’s heartbreaking if fans don’t receive a satisfactory ending. Logically, given the timelines and their survival duration in the wilderness (19 months), it seems fitting for one last season to tie up loose ends as they might be close to rescue. However, there are still several characters alive who do not reside in the present day, suggesting that more of their story remains untold.
In the current time, we wonder about Shauna’s actions. Will she embark on a deadly mission, eliminating all surviving women to keep her secrets safe? Or will there be retaliation towards Melissa for Van’s demise? Alternatively, could it be that the women turn against each other in a final, brutal battle royale?
It’s becoming clear to many fans that Shauna is more menacing than initially thought. What’s even more chilling is not necessarily the specific events that took place in the wilderness, but rather the emotional turmoil the women experience over their past actions.
