One skill that writer/director Kevin Williamson excels at is crafting plenty of dramatic scenes. From shows like “Dawson’s Creek” and “The Vampire Diaries,” to “Scream” and “The Secret Circle,” this versatile creator has a talent for generating suspense on the small screen. In his latest series, “The Waterfront,” Melissa Benoist from “Supergirl” and Holt McCallany from “Mindhunter” lead the family drama. Now, we get our first glimpse at this upcoming Netflix series that could potentially be the standout hit of the summer.
The images displayed here are provided by Tudum and offer a sneak peek into The Waterfront, an upcoming series based on a true story and set against the scenery of North Carolina, depicting multiple generations. These images feature not only Benoist and McCallany in action, but also a significant portion of the supporting cast. Unfortunately, Topher Grace from That 70’s Show, who is also part of the new series, does not appear in these particular shots. According to Williamson, this series delves into the challenging task of discovering the “lesser evil” in difficult situations.
For many years, the Buckley family has held sway over Havenport, North Carolina, with a strong influence on industries like fishing and the local restaurant scene. However, their dominion over the fishing industry is weakening as family patriarch Harlan Buckley recovers from two heart attacks. In an effort to keep the family businesses thriving, his wife Belle and son Cane are diving headfirst into managing the operations.
As the Buckleys navigate treacherous circumstances, Bree, a recovering addict who has temporarily lost custody of her child, becomes embroiled in a tangled relationship that may forever imperil the family’s destiny. In an effort to restore the Buckley dynasty, Harlan decides to reclaim control over the family business before it collapses entirely.
Besides Benoist, McCallany, and Grace, the series The Waterfront boasts an exceptional ensemble cast featuring Maria Bello (known for her roles in BEEF and A History of Violence), Jake Weary (from Oh, Canada and How to Blow Up a Pipeline), Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, and Brady Hepner. The entire eight-episode drama will premiere on Netflix on June 19th.
Kevin Williamson Says ‘The Waterfront’ Is About People Who Do “Bad Things”
In a sense, “The Waterfront” returns Williamson to familiar grounds, as Wilmington and Southport stand in for the fictional town of Havenport. These very places were previously used for filming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Dawson’s Creek,” projects that significantly shaped Williamson’s distinctive style during his early career. As for the essence of this new series, he explained, “It’s about a hardworking man striving to build a better life for his family.
Originally, they rose from humble beginnings to establish a small-scale fishing dynasty within their quaint town. Unfortunately, it’s being gradually taken away from them… It’s essentially a story about ordinary folks who err, occasionally doing wrong things, getting themselves into more trouble, and sometimes managing to correct their course and do the right thing.
When “The Waterfront” premieres on Netflix June 10, you’ll witness the devastation those errors inflict upon the Buckley family. Meanwhile, Williamson is rejoining the “Scream” series as director for an upcoming movie slated for release next year. Additionally, he’s working on a TV show adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s timeless classic, “Rear Window.
