Is Ncuti Gatwa Already Leaving Doctor Who?

The popular TV series “Doctor Who” is set to start a new season in 2025 for Disney+ viewers, but speculation persists regarding its continuation beyond that point. Although the BBC has dismissed cancellation rumors, another significant event has occurred: Ncuti Gatwa has landed a significant role on stage. This news has sparked concerns about the future of the cherished sci-fi program.

In his debut season as The Doctor, Gatwa left a strong impression on numerous fans, with some even declaring him their preferred lead of the contemporary version. It would be quite disappointing if he were to leave ‘Doctor Who’ before the typical three-season run. However, his recent career advancement has me worried that this conjecture may indeed come true.

Ncuti Gatwa Is Joining A Play

The BBC announced that Ncuti Gatwa will portray the role of Elizabethan writer Christopher Marlowe in a play named “Born With Teeth“.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be working with the talented Edward Bluemel, whom you might recognize from his role in “Sex Education” alongside my friend Ncuti Gatwa.

The play will start August 13th, and have an eleven-week run.

I’m Worried This Could Mean Regeneration Or A Gap Year For Doctor Who

Given that Ncuti Gatwa is not available from mid-August until approximately the opening weeks of November, it appears rather doubtful that the production for a new season of Doctor Who will commence before the close of 2025, unless, by chance, they have already filmed his regeneration scene and he’s leaving the lead role either at the end of this season or in an already recorded special.

To ensure that Doctor Who keeps airing more episodes, consider subscribing to Disney+. It offers family-friendly entertainment starting at just $9.99 per month with its new ad-supported plan. If you prefer an ad-free experience, the cost is $15.99 a month. For a 16% savings, pre-pay for a year at $159.99. Check out the deal here!

Russell T. Davies expressed his desire for Doctor Who to air annually following its partnership with Disney+. Since production on Season 3 of Doctor Who hasn’t begun yet, it seems a break in seasons could be imminent if Ncuti Gatwa continues as The Doctor. Davies expressed his hope to create additional episodes, acknowledging that the BBC won’t consider a new season unless they review the ratings of upcoming episodes first.

It appears RTD hinted to TopMob that there’s more to the Pantheon storyline than what can be covered in the current season. This could mean that The Doctor might experience a tragic loss at the hands of the gods he has confronted, triggering a regeneration and welcoming a new actor into the role, initiating a fresh chapter.

Despite some justified concerns that “Doctor Who” might be canceled, I find it hard to believe that both BBC and Disney would completely abandon the long-lasting series. After all, we’re yet to see the standalone spinoff titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea“, which makes me hopeful that the franchise will remain in some form or another.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a growing sense of anticipation that there might be another hiatus in our beloved series, possibly while the powers that be brainstorm strategies to rekindle mainstream interest in everyone’s favorite Time Lord – The Doctor.

The popular series, “Doctor Who,” begins its fresh season on Disney+ this coming Saturday, April 12th. Despite any recent updates, I highly recommend catching the opening episode, given the tantalizing possibility of The Doctor venturing into multiple universes.
