Although it appeared his tenure as the ruthless crime boss and later Mayor of New York might have concluded with Netflix’s Marvel shows in 2018, his comeback in Hawkeye, role in Echo, and now starring in Born Again have made it seem like he’s right back where he belongs. However, this doesn’t stop him from considering other roles as well.
A fan posed a question to D’Onofrio, “If there were another character apart from Wilson Fisk, who would you like to portray?” To this, the actor responded casually, “Swamp Thing.
As a cinephile, I find the notion of Willem DaFoe embracing the role of Swamp Thing intriguingly captivating. His gripping and authentic portrayal of Wilson Fisk showcases his knack for embodying complex characters, a skill that could effortlessly translate to the multifaceted nature of Swamp Thing – if the film ever materializes.
‘Swamp Thing’ Is Not Guaranteed to Go Ahead
It’s not the first occasion that D’Onofrio has expressed interest in portraying Swamp Thing, but the likelihood of the movie being released soon has taken a small hit due to the packed schedule of screenwriter and director James Mangold.
According to James Gunn and Peter Safran, Mangold appears to be their top pick for the role of Swamp Thing. They’ve hinted that if Mangold is unavailable, they’ll simply delay the production of the film until he can commit.
The release schedule for “Swamp Thing” got changed due to Mangold choosing to leave his duties at DC Studios to go on a journey along Highway 61.
The creative mind behind Swamp Thing has temporarily stepped away to work on another small project titled A Complete Unknown. We eagerly anticipate his return to Swamp Thing when he feels ready. Despite this, Swamp Thing isn’t crucial to the bigger narrative we are developing, and we appreciate him as a filmmaker, so we’re content to be patient.
It might turn out beneficial if Vincent D’Onofrio were to be cast as the lead in Swamp Thing, given that Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is currently being filmed. This could leave him without other commitments when Swamp Thing potentially returns.
