Indie comic book giant IDW Publishing becomes the newest name to adopt the strength of scrolling digital comics.
In collaboration with Webtoon Entertainment, a pioneer in the mobile comic format on the web, IDW is planning to make some of their top-tier series available on the Webtoon platform.
Beginning April 25th, reworked webcomic adaptations of “Godzilla: Unnatural Disasters”, the popular serial killer tale “Beneath the Hidden Trees”, and George Takei’s memoir “They Called Us Enemy” will debut on Webtoon. Further titles to be released will be announced at a later time.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that Webtoon, my go-to platform for comics of every kind, even those from top entertainment franchises, is taking giant strides. Partnering with IDW Publishing is an exhilarating move towards broadening our vast collection and bridging more fans with their beloved stories in a fresh, innovative manner.
For IDW, who’s been thriving in sales with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics and gained critical acclaim with the unexpected success of Beneath the Trees, this deal broadens its influence beyond the typical comic book store audience.
Davidi Jonas, IDW CEO and publisher, expressed excitement about teaming up with such a forward-thinking platform. He’s eagerly looking forward to observing how our comic stories connect with Webtoons’ worldwide audience. This partnership is significant in our quest to deliver comics to fans in imaginative and user-friendly formats.
Back in 2021, I had the pleasure of immersing myself in the captivating trilogy titled Unnatural Disasters. This series not only showcased Godzilla’s legendary rogues but also delivered breathtaking kaiju battles and an exhilarating journey that traversed various timeframes. One particularly intriguing segment even took me on a thrilling trip to the underworld.
Under the Canopy, created by filmmaker and artist Patrick Horvath, seamlessly merged the worlds of Richard Scarry with a grisly twist reminiscent of Dexter. It narrates the intricate story of a small-town bear who leads a dual existence – during the day, she runs the helpful hardware store, while at night, she assumes the role of a ruthless serial killer. This unique comic book made THR’s list of top comics in 2024.

Originating from South Korea and subsequently gaining global popularity, Webtoon has formed alliances with renowned comic publishers like DC Comics and Archie Comics in recent times. Additionally, it has teamed up with popular Korean pop groups such as BTS, TXT, and Enhypen, as well as companies like Ubisoft, McDonald’s, Duolingo, and more for various collaborations.
