Christopher Landon, who’s known for directing contemporary horror hits such as Happy Death Day and Freaky, has emerged as one of today’s intriguing filmmakers in the genre. This could be why he was chosen to helm the upcoming remake. The remake, announced in 2022, was planned for production by James Wan and Steven Spielberg through Atomic Monster and Amblin Partners. However, Landon departed from the project following script completion, citing disagreements about the film’s creative direction as the reason.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Landon explained the true motives behind his decision to leave the remake of ‘Arachnophobia’, the 1990 film by Frank Marshall featuring Jeff Daniels and John Goodman. Although it’s likely he would have delivered a commendable update on the idea of a town overrun by spiders, it appears that his ideas didn’t align perfectly with the producers’ vision.
The issue at hand caused discomfort and apprehension in the studio, leading to our separation. I wouldn’t budge on this matter. I refused to implement a modification that seemed like a disheartening, commercialized decision, detrimental to the project.
Originally, “Arachnophobia” was created by Steven Spielberg, marking Marshall’s first directorial venture after spending numerous years collaborating with the director of “Jurassic Park.” Despite not making a significant impact at the box office, it received critical acclaim, now boasting a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The story revolves around a doctor who relocates with his family to a quaint town that is overrun by the offspring of a highly venomous spider. Trouble arises when they discover these creatures are remarkably dangerous.
What Has Christopher Landon Been Up to Since Leaving ‘Scream 7’?
Landon has primarily focused his cinematic endeavors within the realm of horror films. After penning several installments of the Paranormal Activity series (including one of the franchise’s less recognized but still impressive entries), he garnered widespread recognition with movies such as Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse and Happy Death Day. His impressive body of work earned him the opportunity to direct Scream 7, albeit temporarily.
Due to actress Melissa Barrera’s dismissal from “Scream 7,” the film’s director faced unfounded harassment from her fans. Misunderstanding the situation, they believed he was responsible for her firing. Faced with increasingly severe threats, the director chose to resign. Fortunately, he managed to move past this difficult incident and carry on with his career in horror production.
In 2025, horror enthusiasts were thrilled with Landon’s latest writing project titled “Heart Eyes“. This innovative slasher movie showcased Landon’s distinctive style throughout the script, combining chilling horror elements seamlessly with humor. And his recent creation, “Drop“, is generating quite a buzz as well. Featuring Brandon Sklenar and Meghann Fahy in lead roles, the plot revolves around a widow’s attempt at dating, which unfortunately doesn’t turn out as planned.
