Does Dexter Morgan Ever Get Caught?

In the television series “Dexter,” which ran from 2006 to 2013 on Showtime, approximately 100 episodes were aired in total. The ending of this series left some fans dissatisfied as the original showrunner, Clyde Phillips, had already departed and expressed that he would have concluded the story with Dexter being put to death for his actions. Later, in “Dexter: New Blood,” a bonus ninth season, he got an opportunity to bring this plan into effect. This limited series, consisting of 10 episodes that were broadcast from 2021 to 2022, featured many surprising moments, and the finale saw Dexter being apprehended in upstate New York. Notably, he was romantically involved with police chief Angela Bishop (played by Julia Jones), who ultimately solved one of his numerous murders.

In Miami, Dexter had committed numerous murders without facing jail time. However, it was his first murder in upstate New York that led to his arrest. A conflict with local resident Matt Caldwell (portrayed by Steve M. Robertson) occurred in his store regarding the sale of a rifle. Later, Dexter discovered Matt illegally hunting a unique white deer on his property. In self-defense or justice, depending on one’s perspective, Dexter killed Matt in the woods and ultimately disposed of his body by burning it in the town’s incinerator.

Later on, Dexter gets arrested for the murder of Matt, but he manages to escape from jail. He then attempts to convince Harrison to flee with him to Los Angeles. After a heartfelt discussion in the forest, they decide that it would be best if Harrison were to kill Dexter. In a dramatic scene, Harrison urges his father to “wake up and see the consequences of your actions” before firing the fatal shot. As Dexter dies, images of his most innocent victims appear before him, in his last few moments on earth.

Surgical hardware is a key clue in Dexter’s arrest

In a turn of events, Dexter gets apprehended when Chief Angela Bishop in Iron Lake receives one of Matt’s titanium surgical screws, accompanied by a note that reads “Jim Lindsay killed Matt Caldwell.” Suspecting foul play, she reaches out to Angel Batista in Miami. After their conversation, it becomes clear to both of them that Dexter/Jim is the Bay Harbor Butcher. Bautista informs Bishop he’ll be on his way to her, and she starts interrogating Dexter. It eventually comes to light that the serial killer Bishop has been chasing for years in Iron Lake is actually Matt’s father Kurt (Clancy Brown). When she heads to Kurt’s cabin, Dexter manages to lead Sergeant Logan there and ends up killing him.

In this final act, Dexter commits his last murder – a crime that finally brings him to justice. At first, Harrison seems open to accompanying his father to Los Angeles, but then discovers that the person Dexter killed was none other than Logan, who happened to be Harrison’s high school wrestling coach. This revelation fills Harrison with dread, as he fears he might be destined to follow in his father’s footsteps. In a desperate attempt to break free from this fate, Harrison grabs his rifle. Dexter understands the gravity of the situation and, in one final act of guidance for his son, presents himself as a target. Recognizing that he will face capital punishment in Florida, Dexter opts for execution by Harrison’s hand, hoping that it will allow his son to embark on a new path in life.
