Star Wars Horror: A Chilling Idea That Will Haunt Fans Forever!

The Star Wars series, while primarily science fiction, has ventured into different genres lately. For instance, The Mandalorian on Disney+ leans towards the western style, whereas Andor appears to be a blend of crime drama and political thriller. Interestingly, Lucasfilm hasn’t yet fully explored horror within this franchise, although there are rumors of a project in development. I find myself intrigued by the possibility of a film that could combine excitement with suspense – a Star Wars-themed horror movie!

What Exactly Was Said About A Horror Project Set In The Star Wars Universe?

Upcoming on the schedule for Star Wars movies and series is the second season of Andor, which will conclude the highly praised Rogue One spinoff series. In anticipation of the new season’s premiere, Executive Producer Tony Gilroy has been granting interviews, and during a Business Insider event for the streaming show, he revealed an intriguing tidbit. When inquired if he would ever direct a horror project within the galaxy far, far away, Gilroy offered a somewhat unexpected answer:

They’re doing that. I think they’re doing that. I think that’s in the works, yeah.

It’s worth noting that, at present, Lucasfilm hasn’t confirmed or dismissed the possibility of a scary Star Wars production being in development. Regardless, this news should spark excitement among fans who appreciate thrilling content. While some might find a terrifying Star Wars story hard to believe, it’s not entirely implausible given the franchise’s extensive literature and darker themes that have emerged over the years. For instance, there are several chilling tales set within the now-non-canon Expanded Universe, and recent Star Wars comics have delved into spookier elements as well.

Without a doubt, it’s natural to wonder about the central theme of this hypothetical project. While there are numerous options, if I were Lucasfilm, my attention would likely be on a specific planet that has been showcased in several Star Wars TV shows during the last ten years or so.

There’s A Spooky Planet That Would Make For A Great Setting In A Star Wars Horror Movie

A horror film in the Star Wars universe, scheduled for release, would greatly benefit from using Dathomir as its location. Known for being the home of the Nightsisters and other witch clans within the Star Wars lore, this planet is also the birthplace of Asajj Ventress, a Sith-turned-mercenary, who will soon appear in “Tales of the Underworld”. Additionally, Morgan Elsbeth from “Ahsoka” has ties to Dathomir. The inhabitants of this world practice dark magic, allowing for characters to reappear as ghosts or manipulate the forces of the undead.

Towards the tail-end of the Galactic Empire’s dominance, Dathomir is left barren and deserted due to conflicts triggered by its ruler, Mother Talzin, and Darth Sidious. It would be intriguing to create a movie where a gang of rogue traders journey to this seemingly lifeless world in search of a valuable treasure or resource. However, they soon become tormented and assaulted by the spirits of the deceased instead. Besides spectral Nightsisters and sorcerers, these space travelers might also encounter ghostly entities capable of taking control over living beings.

Although it’s highly unlikely that this movie will ever come to life, it’s entertaining to imagine its possibilities. Tony Gilroy’s enthusiasm for incorporating horror elements into the Star Wars universe is intriguing. In fact, director Osgood Perkins proposed a chilling concept – creating short stories based on the “collected dreams and nightmares” of Darth Vader. With such a vast IP like Star Wars, there seems to be plenty of space for horror, and I sincerely hope that the project Gilroy is hinting at will materialize.

Right now, you can stream the various Star Wars movies and TV shows using a Disney+ subscription.
