Following a span of approximately three months filled with mostly dismal outcomes, Jared Hess’ A Minecraft Movie made its grand entrance at the box office last week, serving as a significant boost for blockbuster films. In its initial three days, the film’s domestic earnings surpassed those of any other 2025 release during its opening weekend by almost double, igniting enthusiasm in the marketplace. As for the crucial question regarding whether its popularity could be maintained after its debut numbers were analyzed, it seems that answer is a resounding “Yes,” as evidenced one week later.
This weekend, the Top 10 list has been significantly updated (with half of the list being new entries), but one constant remains – A Minecraft Movie still leads the way. Take a look at the complete chart below and stay tuned for my analysis afterwards.
A Minecraft Movie Adds Another $80 Million To Its Domestic Haul, Crosses $500 Million Worldwide
It’s clear as day: “The Minecraft Movie” is destined for greatness. It’s not a fleeting sensation or a temporary trend; it’s here to stay, with its popularity persisting even after its initial release. Although the movie didn’t leave a significant impression on most critics, it has defied criticism and emerged as a box office smash aimed at younger audiences. The film’s success continued in its second weekend, raking in an impressive $80.6 million (according to The Numbers).
As more Sunday ticket sales come in, the figures will adjust, but currently, there’s a 50% decrease from its initial $162.8 million opening weekend compared to usual movie audience retention and positive word of mouth. This brings the film’s domestic earnings up to $281 million, making it the highest-grossing release of the year, surpassing Julius Onah’s “Captain America: Brave New World” ($200 million) in the box office rankings.
As reported by Variety, the estimated production cost for “A Minecraft Movie“, excluding advertising and promotion expenses, was $150 million. Given this, it’s already in a profitable position. The film is currently generating more revenue in the U.S. and Canada compared to other countries, though the difference is minimal. To date, it has grossed $269.6 million from international markets, boosting its global earnings to an impressive $550.6 million.

If “A Minecraft Movie” wants to claim the title of the biggest worldwide hit of 2025 by the end of its release, it has a considerable amount of success yet to achieve, as the animated film Ne Zha 2 is currently dominating that spot, having earned over $2 billion globally with $1.9 million coming from China. However, “A Minecraft Movie” is in second place right now, and given it’s only April, there’s a strong possibility that it will maintain its position among the Top 10 films of the year by December.
In my previous comments, I mentioned that one significant advantage of this movie is that there aren’t any major studio releases scheduled for theaters in the near future that would compete with its target audience. There’s a possibility that “A Minecraft Movie” could maintain a position in the Top 10 box office rankings until at least mid-May.
The Amateur Settles For A Third Place Finish And Modest Earnings In Its Debut
In my two-star review for TopMob, I pointed out that James Hawes’ film, “The Amateur” with Rami Malek in the lead role, is the third underdog action movie of 2025, following “Love Hurts” by Jonathan Eusebio and “Novocaine” by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen. Although I believe it’s the least appealing of the three (it’s undeniably the most monotonous), it garnered the highest box office revenue during its opening weekend among the trio.
In contrast to the underperforming films “Love Hurts” with $5.8 million and “Novocaine” with $8.8 million, the movie “The Amateur,” boasting its star-power, started strong at the box office by earning an impressive $15 million in its opening weekend. This was across 3,400 locations in both the U.S. and Canada, making it the ninth highest opening weekend of 2025 so far (given the slow pace of this year).
Remarkably, despite boasting an international storyline, a star-studded cast featuring Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan, Holt McCallany, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jon Berhthal, Julianne Nicholson, and Laurence Fishburne, this new action film was produced with a surprisingly modest budget of $60 million.
The worldwide earnings of the revenge thriller have more than doubled, totaling $32.2 million at the box office so far. This includes $17.2 million earned from international markets. Given that this type of movie typically loses its momentum following a strong initial marketing campaign, it’s crucial for it to generate as much revenue as possible at this time.
Settling For Fourth Place, Warfare Fails To Put Up Civil War-Esque Numbers
In a departure from conventional filmmaking, Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s movie “Warfare” attempts to connect with viewers on a deeper level by discarding typical cinematic elements. Notably, it bears a resemblance to Garland’s previous work, “Civil War,” released last year. Although they differ greatly in content, both films are directed by the same person and belong to the same genre, and have been released by A24 within 12 months of each other. The studio had high hopes that the two movies would achieve similar commercial success, but so far, that hasn’t materialized.
In April last year, Civil War dominated the box office during its opening weekend, earning an impressive $25.5 million. However, another movie titled Warfare, also released in 2025, did not experience the same level of success. Instead, it only managed to secure fourth place and made only a third of what the Kirstin Dunst-led thriller made. The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast featuring stars like Will Poulter, Joseph Quinn, Cosmo Jarvis, Charles Melton, and others, but has so far only grossed $8.3 million since its release on Friday.
Absolutely, one significant contrast between Warfare and Civil War is that the production cost for Warfare was $30 million less than that of Civil War ($20 million versus $50 million as reported by Deadline). This undoubtedly contributes to the film’s earnings before its theatrical run concludes. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that Warfare has garnered a more favorable critical reception than any other title debuting in theaters this weekend. Positive word of mouth could potentially lead to increased ticket sales.
Drop
To conclude, I’d like to draw attention to Christopher Landon’s film “Drop”, which finished in fifth place this week. In its first weekend in the US and Canada, it grossed $7.5 million, with a total global earnings of $10 million so far. As a Blumhouse production, the thriller featuring Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar didn’t require a huge budget – it was only $11 million – which means its weekend earnings will stretch further than other films. However, one can’t help but ponder if it could have performed better had it been released on a less crowded weekend.
The title generated positive buzz following its debut at the SXSW Film Festival last month, but it faces a challenging path with several highly anticipated April releases vying for the same audience: Ryan Coogler’s film “Sinners” and David Sandberg’s adaptation of the video game “Until Dawn“.
This weekend, “Sinners” will be gracing theater screens, along with animated film “Sneaks” by Rob Edwards and Christopher Jenkins, as well as romantic comedy “The Wedding Banquet” directed by Andrew Ahn featuring Bowen Yang. Don’t forget to swing back here to TopMob next Sunday for a look at how these titles fare against the many films currently in play.
