In terms of long-lasting TV series, none compare to “Grey’s Anatomy“. Now in its 21st season on ABC and available with a Hulu subscription for streaming, this medical drama shows no signs of losing steam. However, the exit of Ellen Pompeo as a main character has shifted the dynamic, leaving some viewers searching for alternatives. Fortunately, her latest Hulu production, “Good American Family”, delivers all the “Grey’s Anatomy“-like charm I was craving.
Instead of trying to decipher when “Good American Family” airs, I make sure not to miss any new episodes every Wednesday. The series offers an intriguing glimpse into a genuine family’s life, and the plot keeps getting more captivating with each passing week. Although I do miss Meredith Grey, this fresh show is satisfying my need for compelling storytelling in several ways.
As a cinephile eager to catch the latest shows, I’d highly recommend checking out Hulu. For those who are new or returning customers, you can indulge in a full month of streaming for free! After that, you’ll be charged from as low as $9.99 per month. Don’t miss this fantastic offer and start your journey on Hulu today.View Deal
Initially, the show is deeply rooted in a medical enigma, reminiscent of Pompeo’s successful stint on Grey’s Anatomy. The narrative unfolds as the Barnett family welcomes Natalia Grace, a child with an unusual form of dwarfism. However, after the initial two episodes of Good American Family, Kristine, played by Pompeo, begins to harbor concerns that her newly adopted daughter might not be a real child.
In her quest for truth, Kristine sometimes needs to be assertive towards people such as Natalia and her husband Mark. During these moments of intense anger and resolve, I couldn’t help but notice that Pompeo’s portrayal of Meredith in Grey’s Anatomy seemed remarkably similar. For many years we’ve watched the main character of Grey’s Anatomy fiercely defend her patients, herself, and her loved ones. Just like Meredith, you don’t want to cross Kristine.

One reason why the latest Hulu series feels like it continues the narrative of Grey’s Anatomy for me is because Kristine occasionally takes on the role of narrator in some episodes, much like Meredith, played by Ellen Pompeo, does in almost every episode of the medical drama. Although this new show is quite distinct, having a similar narrative thread as a devoted fan pleases me greatly.
So far in the series “Good American Family,” we’ve seen just five episodes. As more episodes unfold, we’ll see if and how the story concludes, and if there are any links to Pompeo’s long-running role on “Grey’s Anatomy.” The Hulu show appears to be gradually revealing why events led to Kristine’s arrest in the premiere.
I’ll be watching the streaming series, which is inspired by the true events of Natalia Grace and the Barnetts. To avoid knowing how it ends from online spoilers, I’m choosing not to look or listen. Instead, I’m excited to see how the TV adaptation unfolds this captivating real-life story.
In 2025, you can catch new episodes of “Good American Family” every Wednesday on Hulu during its television debut. Conversely, for fans of “Grey’s”, tune in every Thursday to ABC for fresh episodes.
