The Last Of Us Season 2 Premiere Cameo Everyone Missed

If you haven’t yet seen the premiere episode of “The Last of Us” Season 2 titled “Future Days,” I strongly advise halting your reading here as major spoilers are forthcoming!

In the second season of “The Last of Us,” we meet up again with Joel Miller, played by Pedro Pascal, and his adopted daughter Ellie, portrayed by Bella Ramsey. They were the central characters in the first season, initially strangers who formed a bond strong enough to be considered chosen family. This time, they reside in Jackson, Wyoming, a fortified settlement filled with armed guards, offering a semblance of safety amidst the ongoing cordyceps virus outbreak that continues to ravage the planet. In an episode titled “Future Days,” we glimpse a moment of happiness amidst the despair. The residents of Jackson celebrate New Year’s Eve, welcoming 2029, and Ellie, despite her current tension with Joel (the reasons for which are yet to be revealed), joins in the festivities along with her friends Jesse (Young Mazino) and Dina (Isabela Merced).

The situation can deteriorate swiftly, but let’s move on to something more uplifting. As the band plays and the residents of Jackson dance, there’s a fleeting yet noticeable appearance by Gustavo Santaolalla – the talented composer who created the music for “The Last of Us” series as well as the original video games from Naughty Dog. It’s no wonder he’s part of the band; the camera momentarily focuses on him, albeit briefly, but he’s undeniably present!

Gustavo Santaolalla is a highly accomplished and revered composer. Apart from his work on “The Last of Us,” he has also created scores for films like “21 Grams,” “Brokeback Mountain” (which earned him an Oscar for Best Original Score), “Babel” (for which he received another Oscar in the same category), and “On the Road.” In addition, a digital likeness of him can be seen in “The Last of Us Part II” during the Jackson celebration scene.

Gustavo Santaolalla appears in an extremely important scene in the Last of Us Season 2 premiere

In the finale of “Future Days,” which marked a return to “The Last of Us” world following a two-year hiatus (season 1 aired from 2023), Gustavo Santaolalla makes a brief appearance. The rift between Ellie and Joel is palpable in this episode, deepening their emotional distance; notably, they both seek comfort in Dina during this time. Dina and Ellie, being close in age, have a friendship, while Joel and Dina share a bond through movie nights and repairing things around Jackson.

In Season 1, it’s established that Ellie is queer, as we witness her budding romance with Riley before Riley meets a tragic end. Later, there seems to be a romantic connection between Ellie and Dina, which deepens after they share a dance following some encouragement from alcohol. However, their public display of affection angers a man named Seth, who uses a derogatory term towards them. In response, Joel defends Ellie and Dina. This incident enrages Ellie so much that she walks away from the dance, leaving everyone behind.

As a devoted fan, I can hardly wait to unravel the mysteries that lie ahead for Dina and Ellie in Season 2 of “The Last of Us.” Fingers crossed we’ll also get some insight into the intriguing relationship between Ellie and Joel. Tune in every Sunday night at 9 P.M. EST on Max and HBO to catch the latest episodes!
