Undoubtedly, many dinosaur enthusiasts and moviegoers recall the exact spot where they stood when Universal Pictures debuted Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park in 1993. This summer blockbuster sent shockwaves through the film industry with its groundbreaking visual effects, and the unique blend of horror and adventure that Spielberg is renowned for. The movie garnered two sequels in 1997 and 2001, respectively, and while they didn’t match the success of the original, they were commendable continuations of one of the most influential films not just of the 1990s, but of all time.

The initial “Jurassic Park” film was an unprecedented success for Universal Pictures, Steven Spielberg, and the field of special effects. It grossed over a billion dollars at the box office, and in the same year, Spielberg received his first Best Director Oscar for “Schindler’s List”, it also won three Academy Awards in technical categories. Remarkably, these two movies were released close together, showcasing Spielberg’s ability to create hits across distinct genres. Consequently, the plan to develop “Jurassic Park” into a series was immediately conceived.

The Iconic Franchise Returns This Summer With ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’

1997 marked the debut of “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” that received mixed criticism. Despite being an exciting follow-up, it didn’t fully embody the essence of the original film. However, it managed to excel financially and was recognized with a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards. Notably, certain sequences such as those involving trailers hanging off a cliff have held up exceptionally well over time. As we entered the new millennium, “Jurassic Park III” hit theaters in 2001, with Joe Johnston directing and Steven Spielberg serving only as an executive producer. Similar to the previous installments, it didn’t quite match the brilliance of the first film but continued to impress visually. The third part also reintroduced “Jurassic Park” character Dr. Alan Grant as the lead protagonist.

2025 marks the global debut of the upcoming “Jurassic” movie titled “Jurassic World Rebirth”. This film signifies a fresh start in the “World” series, following the 2022 release of “Jurassic World Dominion”. Unfortunately, “Dominion” was criticized as a disappointing sequel that over-reliied on nostalgia by reintroducing popular characters from the early “Jurassic Park” era. Despite being another box office hit, it required some adjustments to keep the franchise going.

In this new rendition, titled “Rebirth,” the franchise is set to undergo a fresh start with novel characters and narratives. The latest installment in the “Jurassic” series is helmed by Gareth Edwards, who previously directed films like “Godzilla” (2014) and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” making this his debut within the franchise. Notably, the film’s script is penned by David Koepp, known for writing the scripts of the initial two “Jurassic Park” films directed by Steven Spielberg. The star-studded cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, Jonathan Bailey, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo.
