Simon Pegg Pitches Nick Frost as Harry Mudd for ‘Star Trek 4’

Simon Pegg hopes that his Cornetto trilogy co-star Nick Frost will portray a classic Star Trek character in the Kelvin timeline movies; this idea excites Frost as well. The two have been comedy partners since their time on the popular TV series Spaced, where they also encountered Edgar Wright, leading to the creation of the films Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End – collectively known as the Cornetto trilogy due to the presence of Cornetto ice cream in each film. Besides their work on the Cornetto trilogy, Pegg and Frost have collaborated in other projects like Paul and The Adventures of Tintin. Currently, Pegg is keen on organizing a satisfying reunion for fans.

Despite numerous attempts, Frost has yet to embark on the Starship Enterprise alongside his long-term partner in creative endeavors. In a recent discussion at Awesome Con, moderated by Screen Rant’s Joe Deckelmeier, both Pegg and Frost were present. When asked about potential roles for Frost within the Kelvin timeline, Pegg suggested he play the character Harry Mudd, initially portrayed by Roger C. Carmel in “Star Trek: The Original Series.” Simon Pegg then shared with the audience that this was his preference.

“Believe me, I’ve pitched it multiple times.

Harry Fenton “Harry” Mudd, a cunning interstellar trickster, made appearances in two episodes of the original Star Trek series: “Mudd’s Women” (Season 1) and later “I, Mudd” (Season 2). He also showed up once in Star Trek: The Animated Series. In the modern series, Star Trek: Discovery, Rainn Wilson portrayed Harry Mudd in episodes set before the events of the original Star Trek series. Although Harry Mudd did not feature in the Kelvin timeline Star Trek films, a reference to him is made in Star Trek Into Darkness when Sulu tells Kirk, Spock, and Uhura that the shuttle they’re using was seized during the “Mudd incident,” suggesting that the Enterprise crew encountered him between Star Trek and Star Trek into Darkness.

Will We Ever See ‘Star Trek 4’?

As a dedicated Star Trek fan, I’ve got an update on the upcoming Star Trek 4. It’s been a whopping nine years since we last saw our favorite crew in action with Star Trek Beyond, marking the longest gap between Star Trek films since the series kicked off in 1979. Unfortunately, the production has faced its fair share of setbacks and stalls. The film originally slated for a December 2023 release lost its director, Matt Shakman, who chose to helm The Fantastic Four: First Steps instead. Now, it’s been almost two years, and we’re still waiting for any signs of progress. Simon Pegg, our beloved Scotty, recently addressed this, expressing…

It sounds enjoyable! Let’s consider making another film together. I’d jump at the chance to reunite with the team and embark on a new cinematic adventure, no matter what the plot is. My Enterprise crew members are truly exceptional individuals. This year, I was thrilled to see Zoe earn an Oscar. It’s going to be tough for us, as we lost Anton [Yelchin], who was deeply valued by our group. However, whatever the story may be, I’m ready and willing to participate. At this point, I don’t have any updates to share, but let’s keep our fingers crossed, as it’s not out of the question.

Introducing Frost as Harry Mudd might add an exciting side plot for Star Trek 4. With Jaylah (Sofia Boutella) joining the crew of the Enterprise from the Kelvin timeline, it opens up opportunities to further expand the team beyond the original series. Frost’s interpretation of Mudd could fit well within this ensemble. Although Mudd was a straightforward conman in the original Star Trek series, the Kelvin timeline allows for fresh takes on classic Star Trek characters and themes.

In this new timeline, Harry Mudd can remain morally ambiguous but might find himself reluctantly teaming up with the crew of the Enterprise for their next mission. This character dynamic could infuse the franchise with a touch of Han Solo’s roguish charm, as a scoundrel is brought into the fold to work alongside heroes.
