Tom Cruise is often recognized as a versatile actor who handles a wide range of tasks on film sets. Notably, when he’s the main lead in movies, stuntmen can sometimes take a break for up to a month because Tom tends to perform his own stunts. Interestingly, it’s not just physical feats that Cruise handles; he also executes his own magical scenes. However, it might seem that performing death-defying stunts comes naturally to Cruise.
Prior to the premiere of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” a clip became popular on the official M:I Instagram account. This post featured an interview with Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie, conducted by the Light the Fuse podcast. In this interview, they discussed the Dead Reckoning scene where Ethan Hunt, played by Cruise, encounters Hayley Atwell’s character Grace for the first time and performs a close-up magic trick with a key. McQuarrie shared that the scene required numerous takes because Cruise had trouble mastering the trick. He explained…
As a cinephile, I can’t help but marvel at the authenticity of what we were capturing on set. It was an intricate dance, a delicate balancing act that required precision and patience to execute flawlessly. Time and time again, we found ourselves redoing it, struggling to get it just right. The tension in the air was palpable as Tom’s frustration grew, mirroring our own as we fell further behind schedule. Each failed attempt seemed to fuel his growing agitation, making the task at hand feel like an insurmountable challenge.
As a movie reviewer, I must commend Tom Cruise for his unwavering commitment to performing his own stunts on set. While digital effects may lend a helping hand at times, it’s the genuine article that truly impresses – and in this film, the magic trick was no exception. The director and I were adamant about capturing the enchantment authentically, eschewing camera tricks for a real-life demonstration of sleight of hand. It’s this dedication to practical effects that elevates the viewing experience and leaves audiences in awe.

Indeed, mastering magic tricks requires a good amount of practice. If Tom Cruise wasn’t previously entertaining kids at birthday parties before he rose to fame as an actor, then it’s unlikely he has extensive experience with such feats. Yet, Cruise persevered through his frustrations and managed to make the trick work eventually. However, from Cruise’s statements, his director didn’t seem particularly thrilled when he finally succeeded. To put it simply, Cruise commented…
In my confident belief, this endeavor shall come to fruition. With unwavering determination, I’ve set my mind on making it so. Just as I executed the plan, there was a moment of suspense, and McQuarrie affirmed, ‘Alright, we nailed it, we’re all set.’
It appears that the magic trick required more retakes compared to Tom Cruise’s motorcycle stunt off a cliff. Although both scenes demanded careful planning, it seems that filming the magic trick was notably more challenging than capturing the motorcycle scene.

It’s uncertain if Ethan Hunt will showcase more astonishing stunts in the newest Mission: Impossible movie, but based on hints about the 2025 release, there are many exhilarating actions to look forward to. For example, a scene features Hunt dangling from a biplane, and Cruise discussed filming it, revealing he sometimes fainted during the process.
The upcoming movie “Mission: Impossible – The Last Stand” is scheduled for release on May 23rd. While it may not contain as many illusions as one might expect, keep in mind that much of the action scenes are enhanced by cinematic trickery. In the interim, you can enjoy streaming the first seven movies from the series on Paramount+ with a subscription.
