Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS episode “Killer Instinct” are ahead!
As a dedicated fan of NCIS, I’ve been hooked by the intriguing multi-episode arcs unfolding in Season 22, particularly the enigma surrounding the agency’s new deputy director, Gabriel LaRoche, played by Seamus Dever. His character has been absent since last December, but boy, was I thrilled to see him back tonight in the “Killer Instinct” episode scheduled for 2025!
The latest NCIS episode certainly didn’t disappoint, serving up some unexpected twists for the LaRoche storyline. What really caught me off guard was the revelation that one of these twists actually connected to a plot involving Gary Cole’s character, Alden Parker.
What We Learned About Gabriel LaRoche On NCIS
The storyline “Killer Instinct” unfolded with the apprehension of an assassin known as Paul Morton, also known as The Poet, who had slain Lieutenant Commander Ryan Willis and intended to eliminate Chief Warrant Officer Ian Garza next. Luckily, NCIS managed to detain Morton before his sinister plans could be carried out due to an anonymous tip-off. However, during interrogation, he ingested a lethal substance to prevent revealing any details about his employer or other targets. It was later discovered that both Willis and Garza were security personnel on a train called the Atlas, which carries massive amounts of spent nuclear fuel for the Department of Energy.
The team managed to locate Gemma Wood, the broker for Morton, and Nick Torres disguised himself as Morton to gain access to the jewelry store’s office where she worked. This allowed him to download files from her computer secretly. On the other hand, McGee, who was persistently investigating LaRoche, felt compelled to accompany his wife Delilah to the Deputy Director’s residence for a dinner with them and their spouses. Needless to say, McGee had a miserable time, and it deteriorated further when he searched LaRoche’s office and discovered documents about him. It turned out that LaRoche was aware of McGee’s investigation and decided to retaliate by playing the same game.

It wasn’t long before proof emerged at Wood’s jewelry store indicating that LaRoche was another intended target. Regardless of his personal dislike for LaRoche, McGee felt compelled to safeguard his superior from the fresh assassin who had been dispatched after him. Amidst these events, LaRoche confessed that McGee was initially slated for the Deputy Director role, but that plan shifted following a report criticizing NCIS for functioning more like a family than an organization. However, it seems that LaRoche now acknowledges he was mistaken in this belief, which implies that he and McGee have patched up their relationship, correct?
It turns out that NCIS’s principal characters discovered the Nexus Cartel was behind LaRoche’s attempted assassination. In this revelation, McGee uncovered an additional detail: the tip about Paul Morton originated from a Defense Department server called Nocturne. As Gabriel LaRoche had previously owned a red notebook with “Nocturne” and codes on a sticky note, it dawned on McGee that LaRoche himself sent in the tip. This newfound knowledge has increased his resolve to expose the Deputy Director’s questionable activities, and he made this clear to him directly.
How The LaRoche Storyline Ended Up Being Tied To The Kansas City Mob
In case you’ve forgotten, during the fifth episode of Season 22 of NCIS (available for streaming with a Paramount+ subscription if you need to refresh your memory), we discovered that Alden Parker had spent years at the FBI pursuing the capture of Carla Marino, the leader of the Kansas City Mob. Showrunner Steven D. Binder hinted to me back in December that there was a “flight plan” for Carla and the Kansas City Mob, and lo and behold, they played a surprising role in the events unfolding in “Killer Instinct.” It’s worth mentioning that Carla was also one of Gemma Wood’s clients.
Initially, there was a suspicion that Carla might have arranged the attacks on Willis and Garza, potentially making LaRoche a target as well. However, during interrogation, Wood clarified to Torres and Knight that this wasn’t true. Yet, Wood refused to discuss the matter further due to fear of Carla. As a result, it’s still undecided whether Carla and the Kansas City Mob have direct ties with the Nexus Cartel or if they merely used the same intermediary. The role of the Atlas train in this complex scenario remains to be determined as well.
Since the final episode of NCIS Season 22 is called “Nexus,” we could find solutions to some lingering questions in a few short weeks. However, since NCIS has been renewed for Season 23, it’s possible that the entirety of these storylines may not be fully revealed until the upcoming TV season.
