In Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, although Frodo Baggins is the most renowned Hobbit, it seems fans are beginning to recognize that Samwise Gamgee was the real star of the tale. Similar to their on-screen adventure towards Mount Doom, Sean Astin (the actor portraying Samwise in all three films) has confessed he faced a personal battle during the movie’s creation – one that even caused him to experience panic attacks.
Actor Sean Astin recently reunited with his fellow cast members from “Lord of the Rings” at C2E2 in Chicago. During their panel discussion, Astin shared about the emotional challenges he experienced during the lengthy filming of the trilogy. “Usually, even a big movie would last around 3 or 4 months,” Astin said, “But when we hit the 5-month mark, my body was like, ‘Whoa, we’re venturing into unknown territory here.'” The panic attack Astin described stemmed from the heavy burden of his costume, makeup, and other equipment needed for filming. He elaborated:
*At one point, most movies, even big ones, were only 3 or 4 months long.*
*Reaching the 5-month mark in our trilogy felt like we had ventured into uncharted territory.*
I recall feeling extremely overweight, having added a significant amount of pounds, carrying a bothersome backpack, and experiencing a moment of intense anxiety, which felt like a panic attack.
Sean Astin shared that he had experienced panic attacks before, and he vividly recalled the first one occurring during the production of the trilogy. Specifically, it happened when they were about to apply the prosthetics, particularly during the molding process in Los Angeles prior to filming. Feeling anxious, he contacted his doctor, thinking he was having a heart attack. However, his doctor reassured him, explaining that it was just the process of getting a facial prosthetic, and he would be fine.
Sean Astin Was Counting Down the Days Until ‘Lord of the Rings’ Was Over
During the prosthetic molding session, Sean Astin found himself questioning whether he was truly suited for the role in the trilogy, thinking, “What if I can’t pull this off?” To manage his anxiety and ensure a smoother production process, Astin admitted to counting down the days until filming ended. Although this approach may have annoyed his fellow actors, it ultimately enabled him to portray Samwise convincingly on screen and complete the journey of taking the ring to Mount Doom. In conclusion, Astin shared that he had these apprehensions throughout the production process.
At that moment, I felt overwhelmed and thought it was too much to handle. However, I managed to take some deep breaths and carry on. What struck me was the realization that our capabilities far exceed what we often believe them to be; we possess an extraordinary capacity.
Despite the distressing nature of his panic attacks, Sean Astin expressed profound gratitude towards Peter Jackson for casting him in the trilogy. He emphasized that these movies and his character are deeply cherished by fans. Jokingly, he admitted that although actors often don’t want to admit it, the process was challenging for him.
