To be truthful, making that choice was challenging as it didn’t align with my expectations. Finances were tight, and the people I worked with were all delightful individuals whom I grew quite fond of. Frankly, I adored working alongside them, and it was such a pleasure.

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that the swift popularity of my character among producers and viewers was undeniably gratifying. However, it wasn’t the kind of role I yearned to immerse myself in deeply. Moreover, the demanding nature of my schedule and contract terms at the time restricted my ability to explore other roles I was keen on pursuing.

Although the money was an attractive aspect, Lynskey found herself feeling constrained by being tied to one role, as it limited her creative opportunities. When Season 5 arrived, she decided to exercise her option to break free from her contractual obligations, acknowledging that while this move might not have been financially wise, it was beneficial for her mental health. To summarize her thoughts:

Because of that situation, I decided to make frequent visits instead of a one-time thing. People were bargaining for pay increases, and I jokingly suggested reducing my salary instead. Somebody even mentioned I could become a millionaire. I replied, “I understand, it sounds appealing, but I also noticed the trajectory…” It wasn’t financially wise, but for my life overall, it was the optimal decision.

It appears that the decision wasn’t a straightforward one for Melanie Lynskey to become a series regular, given the substantial income that came with it. However, with such financial gain comes increased responsibility and creative constraints. It might not have been financially advantageous for her to prioritize other roles, but from a broader perspective, it made sense. Additionally, she didn’t completely exit the show; instead, she remained on board throughout its entire duration, appearing in 63 episodes.
