Marathon Will Have Dungeon-Like PvE Encounters; Described As Game’s “Secret Sauce”

It’s possible that a marathon isn’t solely about shooting; it might offer more than you think. As per developers who tested the game, it could include intricate Player vs Environment (PvE) challenges akin to the dungeons found in Destiny 2.

In the latest YouTube upload, renowned Destiny content creator Skarrow9 shares insights into his adventure with Marathon. Although he admits he didn’t have extensive time to delve into these hidden aspects and prefers not to disclose much about them, there’s a Player-versus-Environment (PvE) aspect that promises to invigorate fans.

“I hesitate to call it raid-like, but is definitely like you’re trying to solve puzzles, and secrets, find hidden lore, that sort of thing. Maybe more on the scale of like a dungeon, while you’re in the midst of PvP. That sort of thing is going to be the secret sauce for this game.”

For those unfamiliar with Destiny 2, its most engaging content includes raids and dungeons, especially the latter. To clarify on dungeons, they are smaller-scale activities designed for three players. Similar to raids, they consist of various challenges that blend complex mechanics with boss fights requiring teamwork to defeat.

Skarrow9 pointed out that the fourth map, destined for the Marathon vessel, might be teeming with such mysteries. Given that the story revelations in the initial Marathon took place while examining the ship’s control panels (a technique later used by Bungie in the Halo series), it’s plausible that the three starting maps also contain PvE areas and hidden secrets waiting to be discovered.

As a dedicated gamer, if Bungie manages to realize their vision for Marathon and successfully revolutionize the extraction shooter genre as promised, I’d definitely find the eventual price tag justifiable. From what Game Director Joe Ziegler shares, it seems like they’ve already got a solid foundation to pull that off.

Regardless of your platform preference, Marathon is scheduled for release on September 23 for PC, Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5. Contrary to popular belief, you won’t need a PSN account if you wish to play on platforms other than the PS5. Additionally, there will be a Closed Alpha in April; keep an eye out for registration details!
