As Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” series ended last year, fans of Westerns have been searching for something to fill the void it left behind. It appears that Netflix might just meet their needs with “Ransom Canyon“, a new series set to debut on April 17th. Starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, this series is adapted from the novels by Jodi Thomas. Although every Western today will inevitably be compared to the Taylor Sheridan series, creator April Blair asserts that’s not entirely what she aims for with “Ransom Canyon”. Instead, she describes it as a blend of the romantic aspects found in “Bridgerton” and the small-town drama reminiscent of “Friday Night Lights”.
As a movie reviewer, I couldn’t help but be awestruck when speaking with Blair about her latest project, “Ransom Canyon.” In her words, Sheridan is a “once-in-a-generation writer” who has revolutionized contemporary westerns. This project, however, is something she’s longed to bring to life for quite some time. While Sheridan’s series may have served as the catalyst, the idea behind “Ransom Canyon” was fermenting in her mind for a considerable period.
I’ve been yearning to create a production that blends the spirit of neo-Westerns with a touch of soap opera and romance. Our aim is to produce a piece that not only attracts couples but also families, offering them an engaging viewing experience they can enjoy together. There will be romantic tension, but we’ll maintain a balanced approach – the emotion and passion behind love and longing are more crucial to us, rather than focusing solely on the physically passionate aspects. However, there will still be some sensual elements, but we’ll ensure they remain tasteful.
In my perspective, Friday Night Lights has a significant role, particularly through Duhamel and Kelly. Given their ages, 52 and 44 respectively, they are older than many contemporary leading characters. Kelly, known for her role as Lyla Garrity in the iconic football series, was an inspiration, but for me, it was Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler from Friday Night Lights who served as my models when crafting Ransom Canyon.
The range of ages portrayed was diverse and accessible to all, and I believe it’s crucial to depict that even after turning 40, we continue to experience love, romance, and drama. We don’t cease to make mistakes.
More to come…
