‘Andor’ Creator Tony Gilroy Is Ready to Move on From ‘Star Wars’: “I’ve Contributed Enough For the Time Being”

On Monday evening, Andor premiered its second and concluding season in Los Angeles. During this event, lead actor Diego Luna and series creator Tony Gilroy shared their thoughts about bringing the tale of Cassian Andor to a close.

The character was initially introduced in the 2016 film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” a project that Gilroy collaborated on writing. Later, the prequel series titled “Andor” debuted in 2022 and is currently scheduled to conclude in 2025.

Luna clarified that due to each season taking approximately two and a half years, maintaining the same level of detail and dedication for five seasons would have been too challenging.

As a devoted fan, I couldn’t agree more! It’s pure bliss to propose two seasons instead of ending abruptly, wrapping up in a place where we all adore the work and the journey itself. The passion for the content isn’t limited to the end product but extends to the creative process as well. Alas, parting is always bittersweet, but it feels more fitting to bid farewell now, rather than when the energy and enthusiasm wane.

Gilroy himself acknowledged, “It’s not an overstatement to say this project is the most significant I’ll ever undertake. It’s a substantial piece of my life. Over five years, we produced eight movies, and that’s essentially what we focused on, considering how the episodes are structured.

Following the remarkable success of “Andor” as one of Disney’s top “Star Wars” stories in recent times, with season one earning eight Emmy nominations, including best drama series, there has been a strong demand from fans for creator Tony Gilroy to delve deeper into this universe. However, after a decade filled with various Star Wars projects, Gilroy expressed his desire to move on, stating, “I believe I’ve contributed enough for the moment; I’d like to try something new for a while. I might return in the future, but for now, I’m inclined to go back and direct a film instead.

Speaking as a gaming enthusiast, I’ve recently caught up on ‘Andor’, a show that brings together talented actors like Genevieve O’Reilly, Adria Arjona, Stellan Skarsgard, Ben Mendelsohn, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, Forest Whitaker, and Benjamin Norris. In the first season, people may not have fully grasped our show’s identity, but after receiving such positive reception and respect, we were able to explore every limit. This environment allowed everyone involved to raise the bar in their respective crafts. This growth was evident in the writing, acting, and I believe the character arcs, which span over a significant period of time, have a profound impact.

Beginning April 22, Andor’s second season will be available for streaming on Disney+. On April 23, the premiere episode will air simultaneously on both ABC and FX.
