During Season 1 of the highly successful medical drama “The Pitt,” we encounter a team consisting of medical students, interns, nurses, residents, and doctors working in a bustling and undeniably chaotic Pittsburgh emergency room. Among them is Patrick Ball’s seasoned resident Dr. Frank Langdon. A fresh talent who studied at Yale University’s drama program before earning his BFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2023, Ball delivers a remarkable performance as Frank, particularly during his character’s fall in the series’ 10th episode titled “4:00 P.M.” (Similar to “24,” the show unfolds in real-time.)
After intern Dr. Isa Briones (Dr. Trinity Santos) voices concerns to the on-duty staff in the emergency room, Dr. Noah Wyle’s character, Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, accuses his protege Langdon of withholding Librium doses intended for patients undergoing withdrawal from alcohol and drugs. Upon discovering the pills in Langdon’s locker, Robby fires him on the spot. However, an hour later, Langdon returns to help manage a surge of patients injured in a mass shooting at a festival. In the season finale, “9:00 P.M.”, Robby insists that Langdon needs immediate help before he can return to work in the emergency room, leading to a heated exchange where both men say painful things to each other. Now, we’re left wondering what will happen next for Langdon.
The interview with showrunner and creator R. Scott Gemmill, along with his co-star Wyle, reveals that Langdon will play a crucial role in the upcoming second season of the series, scheduled for release in January 2026. Interestingly, the timing of the season’s premiere is largely dependent on Langdon, as mentioned by Gemmill during the interview.
Langdon’s first day back at work will kick off The Pitt season 2
When Ryan Schwartz enquired if the gap of ten months between Season 1 and Season 2, with Season 2 set during the Fourth of July, was linked to Langdon’s recuperation and his anticipated 30-day stint in a rehab facility, R. Scott Gemmill confirmed that indeed it was.
“Gemmill agreed, stating that Langdon’s return from recovery is shaping the course of Season 2. He suggested that we might find ourselves at the start of Langdon’s workday, but it will be over a month later. The primary reason for this time leap is Langdon himself. A month seems to be the minimum duration he needs, but we could stretch it to 60 or even 90 days. Additionally, the timing depends on when we can shoot in Pittsburgh again, which will be September. To ensure authenticity, we need to capture the appropriate seasonal appearance, whether it’s spring, summer, or fall. We’ve already depicted fall in Season 1.”
The showrunner explained that we will be covering the Fourth of July weekend next time. Approximately ten months later will provide ample time for us to create several new episodes and reconnect with everyone. Additionally, since it is Langdon’s first day back, we get a chance to catch up on his experiences while he catches up with all the other characters.
In the story, following the aftermath of the mass shooting depicted in Season 1, the medical professionals at this fictional emergency room require some time off, or a pause, to gather themselves. It’s not advantageous for them to return too soon before everyone has fully absorbed the impact of these events, leading to unusual or enlightened behaviors that make for compelling viewing – as explained by Wyle.
Will Robby and Langdon’s relationship on The Pitt recover?
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to learn that Dr. Frank Langdon will reappear in Season 2 of “The Pitt.” However, the question on everyone’s mind is: What about his relationship with Robby? By the end of Season 1, their bond seems shattered beyond repair. Not only has Robby been upset since Langdon returned to work after he dismissed the senior resident, but his trust in Langdon has hit rock bottom… particularly following their heated exchange in “9:00 P.M.” when Langdon revealed that a charge nurse witnessed him crying after the shooting incident. Is there any chance these two can mend fences?
R. Scott Gemmill explained this to Ryan Schwartz: ‘I believe that could be the case,’ he said. ‘For a while, things might change in an unusual way. However, it’s not only about Langdon forgiving Robby, isn’t it? I feel that Robby also needs to address his own shortcomings, which is what Langdon seems to have pointed out [in the finale]. No, Robby wasn’t using drugs, but he hasn’t really dealt with his mental health issues, and so I think that’s what Langdon was trying to convey — it’s important for Robby not to be a hypocrite because he often says this job can be destructive, yet he allowed it to happen. Well, so did Robby, unintentionally, and I believe it’s a tough battle for anyone in emergency services roles, particularly those working in the department where they witness the worst of humanity and strive to help.’
Well, I believe there’s room for healing in this virtual bond we share. It won’t be an overnight fix, no sirree. The intricacies of our game world make it challenging, especially considering the limited timeframe – just 15 hours to unfold our tale. But hey, with patience and some strategic maneuvers, I’m confident we can restore harmony.
Patrick is an exceptional actor whom we adore as Langdon, and there are many untapped aspects of his character in this relationship. Wyle further mentioned to Schwartz that since bringing Langdon back to the hospital might require some form of treatment, fans will have to wait until Season 2 to witness his journey. However, from what Gemmill and Wyle have shared, it seems like an exciting storyline awaits us.
“The Pitt” is streaming on Max now.
