David Oyelowo Reveals the Real Meaning Behind the Bizarre Title ‘Government Cheese’

David Oyelowo, who has earned Emmy nominations for portraying historical figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. (in “Selma”) and Bass Reeves (in “Lawmen: Bass Reeves”), among other dramatic roles (in “Silo”), is known for his versatility. He’s not just a serious actor – comedy is also part of his repertoire. Coming soon to Apple TV+ on April 16, you can catch him in the new series titled “Government Cheese.” The story takes place in Los Angeles County’s San Fernando Valley in 1969, and Oyelowo delivers a stunning performance as an eccentric ex-con striving to regain his family man status and become a successful entrepreneur. However, the path to achieving these goals after prison proves more challenging than expected.

Following our conversation with Oyelowo for his ‘Lawman: Bass Reeves’ series, we had another chat with him during the promotion of ‘Government Cheese’. The intriguing title, if you’re curious, is not a mere figment of imagination – it refers to a genuine food item. In fact, this particular dairy product was managed by the U.S. government from World War II up until the early 1980s. Oyelowo shared insights with us about his new character, Hampton, and how he connects to the distinctive title of the show.

In his explanation, Oyelowo stated that the main character, Hampton, and his wife Astoria, much like the government-subsidized food called “Government Cheese” being made more appealing, possess aspirational qualities. They strive to achieve their dreams – Hampton as an inventor and Astoria as an interior designer. These themes resonate with the show’s essence, which is what attracted us.

“Making Lemonade Out of Lemons”

Additionally, MovieWeb had a chat with the talented comedic actor, Evan Ellison, who plays Einstein, the son of Hampton, in the show. Ellison shared his thoughts on the witty name of the series as well:

I believe that ‘government cheese’ symbolizes your current situation. With this series particularly, and where we’re headed, it seems to me we should make something positive out of challenging circumstances – like turning lemons into lemonade. I think the journey will be inspirational for our audience.

In my recent chat with David Oyelowo for our Government Cheese interview, I also had the pleasure of speaking with his on-screen partner, Simone Missick. She brilliantly brings Astoria, Hampton’s resolute wife, to life. Recently recognized for her portrayal of Judge Lola Carmichael in the courtroom series All Rise, it’s quite a fascinating transition for Missick to step into the role of an ex-con’s spouse – a captivating change in perspective within the realm of justice.

Before picking up “Government Cheese”, I had already read two scripts offering roles as a lawyer or a lawyer striving to become a judge. Having spent nearly four years in those roles, which was a rewarding experience, I felt I had exhausted that aspect. Then, I stumbled upon “Government Cheese” and found it astonishing that such a story, featuring characters like me, was being brought to life. It seemed like a unique chance to delve into something I hadn’t encountered before, the period setting in particular.
