The announcement of the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered makes me ponder this: Perhaps Bethesda could also invest similar energy into their Fallout series, focusing on Fallout: New Vegas in particular.
It’s been announced that Fallout 3 is being remastered, but its release is still a while away. On the other hand, Fallout: New Vegas, which shares an engine with Oblivion, could greatly benefit from a high-definition makeover. After all, it’s been running on Bethesda’s outdated engine for quite some time now, and it’s long overdue for an upgrade.
Bethesda could significantly benefit by releasing the critically-praised Fallout: New Vegas on current gaming platforms. Envisioning novice players exploring the desert with enhanced graphics, encountering Mr. House, falling to a Deathclaw north of Goodsprings, and basking in the ambiance of the Mojave with “Big Iron” echoing in the background – such moments are hard to come by and even more precious when they’re fresh experiences.
First off, Fallout 3’s depiction of a post-apocalyptic Washington D.C. will be breathtakingly realistic when it gets a facelift due to updated graphics. For newcomers to the series, exploring the remnants of America and engaging in combat with mutants could serve as an impactful initiation into the franchise. Similarly, giving New Vegas the same level of attention to detail and visual enhancement would be equally captivating.

Redoing New Vegas might also tackle the game’s persistent technical glitches, particularly its infamous suboptimal performance. The game is known for frequent crashes and heavily relying on life-enhancing mods. A remaster could finally address these issues, offering a superior way to savor what many regard as the best Fallout game yet.
As a gamer myself, I can tell you that Fallout: New Vegas wasn’t cooked up by Bethesda’s in-house team, but instead, the brilliant minds at Obsidian Entertainment were behind its creation. That means the legalities and logistics of remastering it are a tad trickier. It’d be quite unusual, wouldn’t it, if we didn’t feel Josh Sawyer’s signature touch in any potential New Vegas remaster, given that he was once at the helm.
If Bethesda and Microsoft were to reconsider New Vegas in the future, it would be an excellent chance to synchronize it with the second season of Amazon’s Fallout TV series, which is said to take place in New Vegas. It’s possible that they might even surprise us by releasing a remastered version of New Vegas unexpectedly, similar to how they did with Oblivion.
