Aimee Lou Wood recently discussed the supposed apology she received from Saturday Night Live following their White Lotus-inspired sketch this past week.
Earlier this week, Wood criticized an “unpleasant and unhumorous” sketch on NBC’s Saturday Night Live (“The White POTUS” combined characters from season three of Mike White’s HBO vacation series with President Trump, his family, and members of his cabinet). Now, Wood reveals that the actor who played her character, Sarah Sherman, has sent her flowers as a gesture.
Wood expressed gratitude for the lovely flowers she received, as shown in her Instagram Stories. She mentioned Sherman and used emojis symbolizing restrained tears, a bow, and a heart.
Since the viral sketch arose, Wood has been expressing her views on Instagram, stating that the skit unfairly targeted Chelsea while only making fun of her. Clarifying her stance, Wood (who played the character of Chelsea in ‘White Lotus’) explained that it wasn’t Sherman who was at fault (“I’m not criticizing her, I’m criticizing the idea,” she wrote), but initially had concerns about Sherman’s British accent and fake teeth. In essence, Wood felt that the humor was based on fluoride, as she herself has naturally large gap teeth, not poor dental health.
“Absolutely, the show aims to poke fun, but shouldn’t it do so in a more intelligent and subtle manner, rather than relying on cheap humor?” was her message to her 2.9 million fans.
Later on, Wood stated that she had received an apology from Saturday Night Live, though she did not specify the source of the message. (The Hollywood Reporter reached out to representatives for Saturday Night Live.)
In a post-finale interview with The Hollywood Reporter following the White Lotus series, the actress known for Sex Education candidly discussed the intense fan reaction to her portrayal, even addressing the feedback about her teeth, as well as the strong reactions to her cherished character’s moving conclusion, which stirred up outrage.
She expressed that today seemed like a fresh start she hasn’t experienced in a while, following the April 6 season finale. The continuous nature of this journey, coupled with the weekly aspect that she enjoys, has kept her immersed in it. However, now she feels liberated, and although there’s a sense of sadness, she also feels free to be herself, Aimee, once more.
