As a passionate cinephile, I’ve got some disappointing news for fellow fans of “Based on a True Story,” the gripping dark comedy thriller from Peacock. Unfortunately, after only two captivating seasons, the streaming platform has decided to end this intriguing series. Starring Kaley Cuoco, best known for her role in “The Big Bang Theory,” and Chris Messina, the show followed the lives of Ava and Nathan Bartlett, a couple who, after facing a string of misfortunes, joined forces with a serial killer, portrayed by Tom Bateman, to launch a true-crime podcast.
According to Deadline, the series “Based on a True Story” won’t be back for a third season. The first season, consisting of eight episodes, debuted in 2023, and another eight episodes were released in November 2024. When it initially aired, creator Craig Rosenberg revealed to several media outlets, including Peacock, that his intention was to produce a show that delved into America’s fascination with transforming serial killers into celebrities.
For about ten years now, there’s been a surge of interest in true crime across America. Podcasts, documentaries, series based on real events – they’ve taken center stage in our society. Criminals are seen as celebrities, and vice versa, which sparked my idea for this show.
My interest was piqued by the concept of a married couple, whose unfulfilled youthful aspirations mirrored their own struggling relationship. Perceiving the surge of true crime as a chance for transformation and marital salvation, we set our tale in the vibrant city of Los Angeles, a place where dreams of fame often clash with reality, creating an intriguing mix of ambition, aspiration, and murder.
When At a True Story’s Second Season premiered, its showrunner Annie Weisman mentioned to Greg Archer of MovieWeb that she didn’t foresee any constraints on the show’s duration. She pointed out that at the conclusion of the second season, they had managed to hint at an entirely new mystery that could have drawn us back for another installment. Regrettably, it won’t be possible for this to occur, even though Weisman also stated: “I can’t think of any reason why we couldn’t carry on with that.
‘Based on a True Story’ Was Loved by Fans and Critics
Unfortunately, no explanation has been provided for the cancellation of “Based on a True Story”. At present, we’re unsure if this decision was due to audience viewership, budget constraints, or other internal matters. Despite the lack of details, it’s worth noting that both fans and critics appear to have enjoyed the series. On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts an overall rating of 79%, with Season 2 being particularly well-received at 83%. Critic Tim Stevens from The Spool praised the season, stating that “as a social satire, ‘Based on a True Story’ Season 2 is more sledgehammer than scalpel, but that’s the charm of it.
Enthusiasts unanimously lauded the show, with Twitter user Scott P expressing, “This series is incredibly entertaining and frequently funny. I adore Kaley Cuoco tremendously. She’s always captivating to watch. Here’s hoping for a Season 3!” However, regrettably, that won’t be the case, as another fan, Krystal D, also shared her anticipation for another season.
The second season of ‘Based on a True Story’ is even more captivating than the first! With its unexpected plot twists and a cast whose chemistry seems to sizzle, you’ll find yourself laughing aloud throughout each episode.
Unfortunately, the second season of the show “Based on a True Story” concluded in a manner that left many questions unanswered, denying us a satisfying resolution. However, this shouldn’t deter you from exploring this fantastic series. You can still catch it streaming on Peacock, and it’s definitely worth watching for its outstanding acting performances alone.
