On television discussion shows like The View, the female co-hosts often express strong opinions, which they acknowledge may not resonate with everyone. In fact, even an esteemed figure like Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg acknowledges that some people want the show to be discontinued.
Hosting the morning series isn’t a walk in the park for everyone, as Raven-Symoné encountered numerous issues with it; however, the show has been a mainstay on ABC’s daytime schedule since 1997, showcasing its resilience and adaptability. Despite its differences, it doesn’t seem to be facing imminent cancellation from television broadcasts. During an episode, Goldberg addressed concerns about the show’s future by highlighting that disagreements often arise due to viewers making sweeping generalizations about the hosts based on their perspectives.
She began her point like this, which sparked some audible confusion from Joy Behar:
People assume that we believe whatever they believe that we believe.
Once it was clear her point wasn’t so swiftly relayed, Goldberg tried again:
People often assume they understand all my thoughts and beliefs, but they don’t. A key method for discovering someone’s opinions is by listening to them speak. One frequent suggestion heard is, “You should remove The View from TV.” Why? Because we provide a platform. We don’t dictate what you should think.
Goldberg clarifies that he doesn’t mean to imply that The View‘s hosts never provide opinionated commentary, as this show wouldn’t persist if they simply sat in silence without sharing their views. Instead, it would have been taken off the air a long time ago, given that viewers wouldn’t find it interesting to watch four to six women sitting politely next to each other without any lively discussions or opinions.
Indeed, avid fans of “The View” eagerly tune in to catch the candid thoughts and spirited commentary from Whoopi Goldberg and her co-hosts on trending news topics spanning entertainment and politics. In essence, what Goldberg was conveying is that the hosts freely express their personal views and assumptions, but she’s not advocating for others to adopt identical opinions. She further elaborated:
In simpler terms, if someone says “This is what I think,” it means they are expressing their opinion or viewpoint. Alyssa, Joy, and anyone else would all say the same when sharing their thoughts. It’s just a way of communicating ideas, not meant to be taken personally. For example, if someone comments on a shirt by saying “That shirt looks a little tight on you,” it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a negative comment; they might simply be expressing an observation or opinion.
It’s feasible that, over the last 28 years, someone might find specific quotes from episodes of The View that contradict what Goldberg said. However, these instances would likely be few and far between, representing more of an exception to the general rule rather than the norm.
To prevent emotions from becoming negative, simply avoid steering discussions about specific topics into areas that deviate from the subject at hand. This is how she phrased it: Keep your conversations focused and relevant by not veering off-topic.
It’s unfortunate when individuals take things personally about you or your loved ones. Here, though, that’s not our style. People may act towards us as if they’re returning the favor, but we assure you, we don’t do that here. Instead, our actions are guided by respect and professionalism.
It’s intriguing to contemplate what prior hosts might comment on whether similar practices took place backstage, given Candace Cameron-Bure’s firm stance against returning despite numerous invitations, as well as Meghan McCain’s frequent criticisms of former colleagues regarding off-camera issues and her unequivocal statement that she would never return.
Each morning, viewers can catch up on “The View” on ABC. Additionally, you can stream the latest week’s episodes by subscribing to Hulu.
