Switch 2’s First 3D Mario Should Be Based On Bowser’s Fury

The Switch 2 boasts a fantastic starting collection, featuring games such as Mario Kart World, the Ultimate Edition of Cyberpunk 2077, and many others that demonstrate its capabilities. Anticipation is high among fans, with Donkey Kong: Bananza and Kirby Air Riders providing a diverse range of offerings, hinting at more exciting content from Nintendo.

The latest 3D installment of Donkey Kong seems similar to a supercharged version of Super Mario Odyssey’s sequel, but fans are eagerly anticipating what Nintendo might come up with for their next 3D Mario game. However, gamers will have to be patient as they wait for this upcoming sequel, and everyone is curious about how Nintendo plans to surpass the success of Odyssey.

Given its potential for further growth, we believe that the Bowser’s Fury mode in the Nintendo Switch’s re-release of Super Mario 3D World could serve as a model for future developments.

Initially, the announcement of Bowser’s Fury left everyone astonished, offering players a glimpse into Mario’s world in an expansive open-environment setting. Prior to this game, the 3D iterations had provided vast areas for exploration, but it was only with Bowser’s Fury that they successfully created a true open world. The ability to traverse a sprawling central hub connected by various regions was a daring step for the 3D Mario series, one that many gamers admired.

Due to being included in the remake of Super Mario 3D World, the open-world aspect turned out to be quite brief. Players confined within it might finish it within three to five hours. There were additional collectibles post-game, but they merely added a few more hours and didn’t extend the gameplay experience significantly. As Mario 3D World remains the main attraction, they couldn’t overextend this particular mode.

Even though it was a brief adventure, Bowser’s Fury was packed with delightful elements that make it an excellent model for the 3D Mario game on Switch 2. Unlike the open-ended 3D games in this series, Bowser’s Fury incorporated power-ups typical of 2D Mario, such as fireballs, boomerangs, tanuki suits, and more. This made Mario seem more adaptable than ever.

In Super Mario 3D World and its earlier version, Super Mario 3D Land, certain power-ups were featured, but they appeared in distinct games. These titles can be considered as hybrid 2.5D platformers since they offer full 3D movement, yet share similarities with the classic 2D games, including flagpoles to climb towards the top. Some fans felt these games didn’t innovate enough with the Mario formula, but they were separate entities and should be recognized as part of this series. If they were to impact a true 3D game like Odyssey, it would make a significant difference in our gaming experience.

In the new game, we don’t necessarily need to include every aspect of Bowser’s Fury. One particular feature that might not be welcomed is the irritating mechanic where a massive Bowser would suddenly wake up and disrupt your exploration by firing fireballs everywhere. To prevent this, players had to search for a Shine Sprite and defeat Bowser. However, at times, this could conflict with objectives or challenges the players were engaged in.

Additionally, it’s important to mention that the game Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will receive a complimentary update on Nintendo Switch 2. This means we’ll get a sneak peek at more exciting features in the future.

It would be great if some elements from the blueprints in Bowser’s Fury make their way into the next 3D Mario game for Switch 2. The idea of having traditional power-ups with a lot of flexibility is very enticing. However, I hope they skip the troublesome Bowser segments, as they tend to be less enjoyable.
