Why Aren’t the PS2 Ratchet and Clank Games Available on PS5?

The Ratchet and Clank collection consistently delivers high-quality platforming action and engaging weapon battles, making it challenging for players to go wrong. It’s possible to contend that each game within this series shares similarities, but this consistency is not necessarily a drawback. Although these games may not strive for innovation, they still offer enjoyable platforming experiences suitable for a wide range of gamers.

What’s the reason Sony hasn’t released more PS2 games for easy play on PlayStation 5? Although a few games like Rift Apart are accessible on PS5, the remake on PS4, and some streaming PS3 titles, it’s disappointing that none of the PS2 games have been ported yet. This seems hard to justify.

Since Sony launched PS Plus Premium, they’ve been gradually offering PlayStation 2 games for purchase, enabling fans to enjoy classic titles on contemporary equipment. This includes popular titles like Sly Cooper, the entire Jak and Daxter series, and even a revamped version of Tomb Raider: Legend. With such games now available on PS5, it’s logical to expect that fan-favorite Ratchet and Clank series from Insomniac could follow suit.

Currently, only the Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters game from the PSP series is playable on PS5. Although it’s an enjoyable title, it’s actually a port of the PS2 version with enhanced camera controls. It would have been fantastic if this game had been upgraded for PlayStation 5 as well.

Fans are likely eager for Sony to rework the original trilogy for the PS5, similar to the speculated God of War compilation. To some extent, this has already begun with the PS4’s Ratchet and Clank serving as a remake of the first installment and a game linked to the 2016 movie. However, it’s common knowledge that the Ratchet and Clank movie was not well-received.

It’s possible that some fans attribute the absence of PlayStation 2 games on PS4 to the low sales of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, but it seems unlikely. As previously mentioned, the Jak and Daxter series, which hasn’t had a new game since the PS2 era, is currently available, as is the Sly Cooper port from PSN, a franchise that hasn’t seen a new release since the PS3. This suggests that there might be other factors at play in Sony’s decision-making process regarding PS2 games on PS4.

It’s quite likely that Sony might eventually make these classic 3D platformer games available on PSN, considering their popularity among fans who cherish a nostalgic trip down memory lane. These games, currently enjoying a resurgence in the gaming industry, are must-plays for everyone who appreciates the genre’s unique charm. If Sony recognizes the success of Astro Bot, it could be an indication that more 3D platformers would be warmly welcomed.
