Glen Powell to Star in Judd Apatow Comedy About Fallen Country Music Star

Glen Powell and Judd Apatow are gearing up to collaborate on a fresh comedy, delving into the realm of country tunes.

Glen Powell and Judd Apatow are teaming up for an upcoming comedy that takes a humorous look at country music.

Universal Pictures is swiftly advancing a yet-unnamed movie project, which will see Powell take the lead and be directed by Apatow. They are collaborating on writing the screenplay for this film, focusing on the story of a downfalling country western artist.

Apatow creates content for Apatow Productions, a company he’s long been associated with through an overarching agreement with the studio. Meanwhile, Powell and Dan Cohen produce projects under Barnstorm, thanks to a first-look deal they struck with Universal this year. Previously, Kevin Misher, who used to head production at Universal, has also been producing content for his own company, Misher Films.

Erik Baiers, Universal’s top-tier production development executive, takes charge of the film production process at the studio.

At the moment, Apatow is working on a two-part documentary series for HBO titled “Mel Brooks: An American Original,” which he’s producing and co-directing with Michael Bonfiglio. Prior to this project, Apatow has directed films like “The Bubble” released in 2022 on Netflix, as well as movies such as “The King of Staten Island,” “Knocked Up,” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” all of which were distributed by Universal.

Previously, Powell featured prominently in Universal’s blockbuster movie “Twisters” and Richard Linklater’s Netflix production “Hit Man”. Notably, he was not only an actor but also a producer and co-writer for the latter. Lately, he completed filming for the revenge thriller “Huntington”, produced by A24 and Studio Canal. Furthermore, Powell will be seen in Edgar Wright’s reimagining of “The Running Man” for Paramount, which is set to premiere this autumn. Moreover, he headlines the upcoming series “Chad Powers” on Hulu.

Last month, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Universal has acquired a proposal for the science fiction film titled “The Natural Order.” It’s currently being discussed for Barry Jenkins to direct Powell as the main character.

Apatow is managed by WME, Mosaic, ID, and Ziffren Brittenham. On the other hand, Powell is under the management of CAA and Johnson Shapiro.
