The “Star Wars” collaboration between actor Ryan Gosling and director Shawn Levy, previously unnamed, now has both a title and a scheduled release date.
The game titled Star Wars: Starfighter will be released on May 28, 2027. This is three weeks following the premiere of another massive Disney title, Avengers: Secret Wars, which is set to launch on May 7, 2027.
The announcement was made during a crowded panel at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Japan, which is a biannual event that celebrates everything related to Jedi’s, Sith’s and other creations from a distant galaxy (Star Wars universe). It’s not certain if the title has any connection with the 2001 video game of the same name.
Gosling remarked on stage that the script is exceptional, boasting a captivating narrative with unique and well-developed characters. It overflows with emotion and excitement, and there isn’t a more fitting director for this tale than Shawn.
After Gosling walked onto the stage, there was a quick flash of a photo from my old Star Wars themed bedroom sheets, a nostalgic blast from the past that my mom had submitted.
Gosling playfully remarked, ‘She clearly still has them.’ He speculated that she might have kept these items for fans, but more likely as a means to validate years of collecting. He further noted, ‘From the photo, it appears I was already envisioning Star Wars before actually seeing the film. That’s probably shaped my entire concept of what a movie could be.’
Since 2022, Levy has been working diligently on a new Star Wars project. The screenplay for this venture was penned by Jonathan Tropper, who previously teamed up with Levy on movies like “This Is Where I Leave You” and “The Adam Project.
The duo isn’t revealing much about the movie plot, but there has been growing interest in Hollywood regarding this project lately. Although several actors have been mentioned, most of them turned out to be false rumors. However, it appears that they are looking for a young actor to work alongside Gosling’s character and two villains, one male and one female.
This upcoming movie, titled “Starfighter,” is not connected to the popular Star Wars saga known as the Skywalker Saga, which revolves around Luke Skywalker and his father, Anakin. Instead, this film occurs around five years after the events depicted in 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
According to Levy, this isn’t a prequel or sequel to the previous storyline. Instead, it’s an entirely new journey we haven’t experienced yet. It takes place in a timeframe not previously explored, specifically a few years after the events of “Rise of Skywalker.” Production for this project is slated to begin this fall.
There’s significant excitement surrounding the Levy-Gosling project because it will be the second film produced since “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” which disrupted Star Wars movie plans following its reception. The first film post-“Skywalker” is “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” a spinoff from the hit Disney+ series “The Mandalorian.” This movie is currently in post-production and is set to be released on May 22, 2026.
