Over the course of many years, Marvel Comics has created numerous iconic villains. Among them, one of the most formidable antagonists from recent times is Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin. His influence extends beyond the pages of comic books, appearing in live-action adaptations, animated universes, and now the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s a character to be reckoned with, and fans have plenty to explore about his history in the comics.
Historically, Kingpin is often portrayed as an adversary of characters like Daredevil or Spider-Man, but it’s essential to remember that he poses a greater danger than just being their enemy. He isn’t hesitant to take on any hero, including the supposedly invincible ones. Here are some points to bear in mind when Kingpin makes his next appearance on screen.
Matt Murdock Is the Kingpin of This Universe
“What was it you called me? “Matt Murderdock?” I dig it. Makes a nice hashtag.”
-Matt Murdock
For Marvel fans, the idea of the multiverse isn’t foreign, and it’s no surprise that Fisk plays a unique role across different dimensions. Remarkably, in some realities, the Kingpin is not the same character as we know him; in one such universe, he doesn’t even bear the title, yet he does show up. For additional insight, Earth-65 is the dimension where Gwen Stacy, also known as Spider-Gwen/Ghost-Spider, resides.
In an astonishing twist, it turns out that Matt Murdock, on Earth-65, is none other than the formidable Kingpin. Not only does he bear the title once held by Wilson Fisk, but he also wields control over The Hand. This lethal alliance presents a significant threat, given that Murdock skillfully navigates the shadows while keeping up his public persona. He’s an adversary that Gwen Stacy is still grappling to understand, as her challenges clearly demonstrate.
Kingpin Even Went Into Voluntary Exile
“No, no, no! Vanessa! No, do not leave me again!”
-Wilson Fisk
Wilson Fisk, known for his imposing presence, often comes across as bold, self-assured, and competent. Yet, it’s important to note that he’s not immune to uncertainty regarding his life choices. In fact, there was a time when Wilson chose voluntary exile from America, taking his family along. This decision wasn’t just about distancing himself from his criminal empire, but also involved surrendering crucial evidence against former accomplices.
Despite the criminal network potentially letting Wilson Fisk escape, there was no question they wouldn’t exact retribution for his betrayal by revealing their secrets. Unfortunately for Fisk’s wife, she became the one to bear the brunt of their wrath. For a significant period, it seemed as though she didn’t make it through the ordeal, which propelled Kingpin back into the criminal underworld with an unrelenting fury.
Fisk May Be Famous for Working In New York, But He Has Many More Connections
In a new approach, the criminal realm will function like a corporation… with the leader at the helm, titled as the ‘Chief Executive’ or simply, the ‘Kingpin’!
-Wilson Fisk
Wilson Fisk, often recognized for orchestrating the criminal activities within his city, should not be underestimated as his influence extends beyond its boundaries. In reality, the Kingpin has connections that span globally, linking him to diverse crime networks – from large-scale organized crime syndicates to individual criminals seeking to collaborate with this formidable villain for a suitable price.
Ever since he first appeared on the scene, Wilson Fisk has been tirelessly working to broaden his influence beyond Hell’s Kitchen. His infamous connections with The Hand and HYDRA might not be so surprising for a villain like him. Ultimately, Fisk is willing to strike any deal that moves him one step further towards achieving his objectives.
Credit Belongs to Sydney Greenstreet for the Kingpin’s Looks
“They have the men, the guns, the money. But I am the Kingpin.”
-Wilson Fisk
Wilson Fisk, more commonly known as “the Kingpin,” is renowned as a creation of Stan Lee and John Romita Sr. This iconic character made his debut in issue #50 of The Amazing Spider-Man back in 1967. It’s intriguing to note that when Romita Sr. was initially sketching Fisk, he seemed to draw inspiration from a well-known actor of his time. That actor was Sydney Greenstreet, who gained fame for his performances in movies like “Casablanca,” “The Maltese Falcon,” and “Passage to Marseille.
Between Greenstreet and Fisk, it’s clear that Greenstreet’s impact significantly shaped Fisk’s aesthetic. This is evident in Fisk’s design, which often features a ’40s style, complete with a cigar and cane. Interestingly, Greenstreet has influenced other pop culture characters as well; he was a key inspiration for the design of Jabba the Hutt in Star Wars.
Fisk’s Helped Several Characters Gain Access to Abilities
“Crime is on the rise — and therefore so are our profits.”
-Kingpin
Based on its form, Kingpin might or might not possess special abilities or powers. However, it’s important to note that Wilson Fisk, despite lacking his own superpowers, has occasionally facilitated the acquisition of new abilities for those in his employ, though this isn’t always deliberate. For instance, Fisk recruited Dr. Jonathan Ohnn for research into teleportation (similar to Cloak’s power), but an unforeseen accident led to Dr. Ohnn undergoing a transformation, complete with the acquisition of a new ability.
After the unfortunate incident, I, now known as The Spot, found myself with an unusual ability to create my own gateways. Though I’m often mocked in the superhero circle, Fisk has still called upon me on occasion. In another turn of events, Fisk orchestrated Black Cat’s acquisition of powers, all while keeping his involvement hidden.
Fisk’s Son Also Becomes a Villain
I have a son named Richard who I believed was deceased. However, against all odds, he has returned. This return fills me with fear because it seems he intends to seize the position of Kingpin. Though he harbored the ambition, his capability was never there. I don’t wish for him to lead that life.
-Wilson Fisk
Wilson Fisk might not appear as a typical family man, but it’s clear he held deep affection for his wife and child. Introducing Richard Fisk, the young offspring of Wilson and Vanessa. Being cautious, Kingpin sent his son to a distant location for protection. However, even from afar, disturbing news about his father’s criminal life eventually found its way to him. Eventually, Richard comes to terms with his father’s unsavory profession.
As a gamer, I embrace the unexpected twist, feigning my own demise to chart a path as a Kingpin worthy of respect. Adopting the alias The Rose, I choose not to tread in my father’s footsteps but instead, plan to reap everything he meticulously constructed. Making waves and stirring up mischief, I carve out a reputation for myself that’s hard to ignore.
Maya Lopez Shot Fisk in the Head
Hi, I’m Maya Lopez, but lately, I’ve been questioning whether I’m the same person as before. They call me Echo in the papers, and that name seems to fit somehow. Here’s my tale.
-Echo
Maya Lopez transforms into a complex character following the tragedy of her father’s demise, which pushes her towards a potentially hazardous pursuit of vengeance. As she delves deeper, it becomes evident that Wilson Fisk is the one who orchestrated her father’s death. However, instead of backing off, Maya remains resolute in her quest for justice against Fisk.
In reality, Maya was enraged because Kingpin had deceived her into thinking it was Daredevil who was involved. Typical villain tactic, right? So, Maya, also known as Echo, aimed and fired at Fisk. Although he lived through the attack, Fisk suffered a temporary loss of sight. A similar sequence of events unfolds in the climax of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Hawkeye series, where Maya pursues her father’s killer, Fisk, seeking revenge. This backstory is crucial to the plot of the Echo series.
Despite All Odds, Wilson Fisk Became the Mayor of New York
As the Mayor of New York City, I must clarify that whatever your intentions may be, there seems to be a misunderstanding. I’m not the person you believe me to be. This has been the case for quite some time now.
-Wilson Fisk
Kingpin, Wilson Fisk, has consistently timed his actions perfectly. An opportune moment presented itself when HYDRA began threatening New York City, isolating it and attempting to seize control. In response, Fisk maintained a facade of benevolence, publicly opposing HYDRA, and ultimately helping safeguard the city.
It’s clear that Wilson Fisk didn’t prioritize the well-being of New Yorkers, but rather aimed to be well-regarded by them. By winning their favor, Kingpin managed to enter the race for Mayor of New York City and emerge victorious. He didn’t need to resort to dishonest means or intimidation to ascend; all he had to do was manipulate public opinion in his favor.
It’s Safe to Say That Kingpin and Spider-Man Do Not See Eye to Eye
“And… if some maniac has decided to rid me of Spider-Man, why should I interfere?”
-Wilson Fisk
Due to Wilson Fisk’s modus operandi, it’s not shocking that he has earned a certain level of infamy among superheroes and vigilantes. While he is most famously associated with Daredevil, this isn’t the sole adversary he encounters. Kingpin frequently finds himself in conflict not only with Daredevil but also Spider-Man, another New York hero who strongly resists Fisk’s influence. These confrontations even resulted in Fisk coming close to killing Aunt May on one occasion.
Ever since his debut, Wilson Fisk has faced off against numerous Marvel characters, particularly those residing in New York City. He’s encountered figures such as Luke Cage, the Fantastic Four, and Miles Morales. Similarly, he’s found himself on the receiving end of conflicts, which is usually an unpleasant situation.
People Close to Spider-Man and Daredevil Keep Working for the Kingpin
“We need each other, Daredevil. We are partners after a fashion. We are the power in this city.”
-Wilson Fisk
It might appear surprising that a notorious boss of an underground criminal network like Fisk could interact with well-known Marvel characters. However, quite the contrary seems to be the case. In fact, Fisk often uses individuals associated with popular heroes, perhaps understanding the distress this association would bring upon these characters.
One illustration is Elektra, a former love interest of Matt Murdock, whose past is intricate and convoluted. Elektra, at one point, worked for Wilson Fisk and was tasked with eliminating Foggy Nelson – although she ultimately didn’t carry out the deed. In another instance, Elektra took up a position as an accountant at Fisk Enterprises. Some other named characters who have been employed by Fisk include Bullseye, Typhoid Mary, and Hobgoblin.
