2XKO, Riot Games’ new fighting game, is currently undergoing Alpha Testing, ahead of its anticipated launch later in the year. Content creators specializing in fighting games have already gained early access and their matches have given me a sneak peek. At first glance, it appears to be a 2.5D fighter with team combat as its main focus, which aligns with the game’s title.
This game’s playstyle is reminiscent of Marvel vs. Capcom, Street Fighter X Tekken, and Dragon Ball FighterZ. In the game, teams of two face off against each other; the objective being to knock down the opposing team first to win the match. Seems straightforward, doesn’t it? However, the thrill is amplified when four different players control separate characters in each team, much like a four-player tag team match in SFXT.
In fast-paced fighting games like tag teams, a common feature is the focus on rapid combat, using hit-confirms to initiate combo sequences. This mechanic should be familiar to those who have played similar games. The control structure is reminiscent of Marvel vs. Capcom, featuring light, medium, heavy attacks, special moves 1 and 2. However, it stands apart from MVC by incorporating separate buttons for dashing, tagging, and parrying.
In simpler terms, some games feature a “burst” meter that allows players to interrupt combo sequences, similar to the Roman cancel technique found in games like Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and others produced by Arc System Works.
Finally, these lobbies function like Battle Hub in Street Fighter 6, providing a virtual arcade space where players can gather and issue challenges to one another.
Before the game enters full release (during Alpha Testing), interested players can secure a spot for testing by visiting the 2XKO Alpha sign-up page. Here, they can either create a new account or log in using their Riot Games credentials. Following this step, you’ll be prompted to complete a brief survey about your fighting game and general gaming experience. Once completed, keep an eye on your email for a confirmation message that grants access to the playtest.
